Alright, so names Jesse, I am 29 yrs old with right temporal lobe damage from 13 yrs of active addiction to alcohol. I have been sober for 3 going on 4 yrs now, but have been drinking Mtn Dew like crazy since I quit drinking. Recently I switched to Diet Mtn dew, and twice now I have had the symptoms of a seizure coming on. Everyone should know this "weird" feeling. Today I actually had to sit down cause I was afraid of having a gran mal seizure and hitting the pavement with my head(which I have in the past). Anyway, I take 500mg of depakote daily and it has done wonders compared to what I used to take. So my question would be, does Diet soda cause seizures? I am kinda worried that I may need to go see a Dr again. Any input would be wonderful. Thanks

Hi jessser84,
I googled and did find people that felt like aspartame contributed to their seizure triggers. I think it is likely the same as with other things like caffeine and alcohol that it depends on the person. Some people can handle small amounts, some can handle lots and some can handle none. I would try cutting out the diet soda and seeing if it helps. Good luck!

It is the only thing that I have changed in the past 2 weeks. Me and my wife are on a tight budget, so the food hasent changed. I am in college, weather hasent changed(lol). Its the same daily routine. I take my depakote on time every night. I saw a few ppl online said coke zero causes people with epilepsy to have seizures, or brain zaps?

One huge seizure trigger for me is caffeine. A little bit here and there is ok but if I drink a lot of it, especially in one sitting, I'm sure to have a seizure. I know that Mtn Dew has a good bit of caffeine in it, I usually stay away from that. I don't know if the diet version may have more caffeine or are you drinking even more now that you've switched?
