hello there, my 19 yr old daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy almost a year ago and I was wondering if its not uncommon to be diagnosed in late teens and why. Its so strange to me that in 18 yrs we never knew she was epileptic.

im 16 and i had my first seizure in september and i've had many since then. i was recently diagnosed with focal and generalized epilepsy and there is no epilepsy in my family. Based on what my neurologist has said, it is not uncommon and it is very possible that her epilepsy wasn't seen because she didnt have it until then. thats what it is with me anyway. good luck

Olivia, Thanks for your reply. I see what your saying. How did you and your parents deal with your diagnoses? My daughter has generalized sd. There is so much to learn. Youre a brave girl.

Since epilepsy has many causes -- known and unknown -- it shows up in very individualized ways, and can appear at any age. It can result from a head injury. Or from an infection. Or from a hormonal fluctuation. Or a genetic predisposition. Or a nutritional imbalance.

I didn't have my first seizures until I was 35. I may have had a lower seizure threshold because of a head injury when I was 5, but I can only guess at why it took 30 years before I went over that threshold.

Hi Sabina,

I was only diagnosed 2 years ago (at 24) with simple partial epilepsy in 3 lobes on the left side of my brain. I sat down with my mother to try and figure out how long I must have had epilepsy for without knowing it, it turns out it started when i was about 7. My mother remembers a huge change in my personality and I went to a number of hospital appointments at the time as i kept seeing things, something which i was told i would just grow out of. So we spent 17 years never knowing about it and my change in behaviour and seizures were all put down to the fact i was an awkward child!

Its easy not to notice something until it hits you in the face. Its just great you didnt have to wait even longer to find out. Good luck!

You suddenly are hit with having epilepsy and its a struggle trying to grasp it. I'm glad she never did get her licence. For some reason I deliberately kept stalling when it came to taking her for her driving test.
