Well it's been 34yrs since I've been diagnosed with epilepsy and 30yrs since I had my last seizure. I recently had a seizure on June 12 two seizures to be exact that put me in the hospital for 6 days with compression fractures of the T4 and T5 thoracic vertebrae and a broken shoulder. I lost almost two days of memory, losing the memory is something that does happen to me when I have seizures but not like this, I can't stop thinking about it. Is this going to get better? Previous injuries include a broken jaw and broken nose. Am seeing a new neurologist now. A buddy of mine named me trainwreck, if you could see me you would understand.

Other then that life is good, I am so thankful, it could be worse.
I feel that I have so much to learn now that this has happened.

Hi Trainwreck,
Welcome to CWE.
That's pretty good to go 30 years seizure free, sorry to read about your recent seizures though. Do the drs have any idea what triggered the seizures?
Are you on any Anti Epilepsy meds at the moment?

Hope you can get your seizure under control again.

I agree with CQ, 30 years seizure-free is great. Sorry to hear of your break through seizure. Maybe a new medicine will bring them under control again.

Change in pharmacy

The Dr. suspects it was a change in pharmacies. I was on 50mg of topamax a day, now I'm on 100mg. I was on the 50mg at the time of the seizure for about ten years, the Dr. thinks it was just enough so when I changed Pharmacies that did it. Generic drug companies can have a ten percent variance from the original I think. Well anyway, I'm home for 6 months (lost my license), getting cabin fever!!!!

Hi Trainwreck (great name by the way), welcome :)

First off, a big  for those 30 years, and sorry to hear about those breaks- I know they're all bad but I think I hate crushing my ribs the worst, and shoulders are a massive PITA as well- all slinged up for ages :(

I was gonna suggest maybe tolerance developing after all these years, when I saw you were still on meds- but then when you mentioned the generics, that's probably more than likely..

There was a big backlash over here when the gov decided to let pharmacies start issuing them all the time unless the actual brand was on the script. The E community (and many others) went nuts over it, and I was shocked to find out how much the variance can be.

Oh well, at least you've got 6 months of chat-time on here ;)

Hi Trainwreck, welcome to CWE!

I'm sorry about the breakthrough seizure. And that it might have been caused by a variance in generic meds is doubly frustrating. I hope the increased dose gives you the "safety net" to protect against any issues with the generic in the future.

I've found that new onset seizures (particularly "two-fers" like yours) can be pretty severe in terms of injuries and memory loss. Technically, your recent seizures aren't "new", but they might as well be given how long you went seizure-free. So yes, things will get better, but you should be gentle and patient with yourself as you heal. Feel free to explore the forums here (and your two cents) to keep the cabin fever at bay.

Best,
Nakamova
