Hi I'm new here, I'm 14 and I'm unsure if I have epilepsy, I had encephalitis last year which can cause epilepsy, so a year after it I've started experiencing absence seizures they last about 1-10 seconds and I think I've only experienced 2 long lasting ones, ill experience a few 1-3 second ones a day or sometimes not at all, one happend when I was on my Xbox and just stared at the screen but I was still controlling in the game, the second occured when I was out with my friend (it was a very hot day) we was walking up a long path and I was a little bored so I looked down then it happened I continued to look down in it but I carried on walking with nothing unusual happening I'm sure nothing weird happend it felt like I was daydreaming about nothing, when I snapped out of it I realised that I lost awareness and I heard people who have epilepsy have no memory of the seizure and continue with what they are doing, I know that I lose awareness after them, they have never occurred in mid conversation while I'm talking so thats something that doesn't happen, I was thinking about getting a MRI AND EEG scan. But I'm wondering what people on here have to say.

Hi! Keep a note (journal) of these experiences, and see a doctor for referral to a neurologist.

It does sound similar to experiences that I have had and generally my seizures haven't happened while I am speaking. seizures can vary though for each of us. Whether it is the warm weather, stress, lack of sleep they can all be triggers. As was already said keep a diary of what you are doing, how it felt before and after. And sometimes even foods can trigger things to happen. Keep that journal handy for at the least your general physician but it would be best to see a neurologist for their direction. Good luck and have a good weekend.:hugs:

Welcome James!

The first step is to see your doc and ask for a referral to a neurologist. The neuro will likely ask for a detailed description of your symptoms, so be prepared. And if you have experienced any other unusual symptoms -- even if they don't seem significant -- make sure to mention them to the doc. Strange perceptions or sensations, muscle twitches, sleep problems -- those can potentially be a sign of abnormal neurological activity. It would be unusual for you to actually be aware of having had an absence seizure, so it's possible that some other kind of seizure, or something else entirely is going on. Either way, it's important to get some answers.

hitting head

Could a hit to the head cause this? I also get frustrated with myself and I hit my head hard although the last time I did it was a few months ago I think, I've hit myself on the forehead and on the temple.

First things first: Hitting yourself on the head is NEVER a good idea. When things get frustrating, it's much better to punch a soft pillow or yell at the top of your lungs in the shower or go for a walk until your brain calm down. If you're feeling so much stress that you are self-harming, it's time to make some changes. Don't be afraid to ask a friend or relative or counselor for a help in making those changes.

Second things second: It's unlikely that hitting yourself on the forehead/temple would cause seizures (you would have to knock yourself unconscious), but given how vulnerable our brains are to trauma, please don't make a habit of it. Repeated blows to the head can potentially cause problems down the road.

:hugs:
