Hi All

It's great to find a forum that also allows partners of people with epilepsy to join! The only Australian forums that I can find relating to epilepsy are only for those that have epilepsy to partake in discussion.
My gorgeous guy is 36 and has been epileptic since he was kicked in the head with steelcaps by his stepfather at age 14. He has tonic clonic seizures mostly once a week at present. We have been together for over a year and the longest stretch without a seizure has been eight weeks. They seem to all happen in his sleep - generally he will have one early in the morning followed by another 2 at approx 3 hr intervals. This will wipe him out for at least the rest of the day. He had a cavernoma removed 3 years ago and was seizure free for a short while until he was bashed by 5 guys one night 18 months ago and now the seizures are back with a vengence. He is on Topamax & Keppra. The keppra dosage is 3000mg a day.
The biggest challenge is trying to find employment for him. He has been unemployed for 6 years. No employer will risk him using their machinery even though his seizures are nocturnal. As a result, boredom and frustration dominate his life. I try to keep him busy and take him out as much as possible on weekends, but I know that not having a job really gets him down.
The government will not give him a sickness benefit as they say he is still capable of working a 15 hr week. He currently has a recent bleed on the brain and is having another EEG this week and going back to the neuro. If that's not sick, I don't know what is! One visit to the neuro costs $220 and he only gets $245 on the unemployment benefit. So its a financial struggle too, but hey, love conquers all obstacles.

Welcome Catzy

Good to have you here. There's a lot of other really cool partners & relatives that are on this site. I'm not one though, I've had my seizures since birth.

I have to admit your guy is lucky that his seizures are nocturnal, I' rarely convulse but I hate when it happens in public.

What are the rules in Oz about him telling his boss's about his seizures. I don't tell employers. Even if I could get fired for not telling them it would be worth it just to get the job & the possibility to prove myself.

Well make yourself at home & check out the rest of the site.

Tks Epileric. I'm not sure if he has to disclose his epilepsy or not, but I still think it best whilst the seizures are so frequent and its not like he can phone in sick for himself whilst having seizures. He is currently with a company which helps find employment placements for those with disabilities/illness so at present it is disclosed at any interviews. He is also on bail for an episode that happened about 18 months ago which ended up with him assaulting police officers. But he doesn't remember the incident - it was like he had a major meltdown at the time. I guess we just have to currently keep working on trying to find out what is causing the seizures and reducing their frequency. But it seems there are just so many jobs that he can't do because of it.

Hi catzy, welcome!

It must be tough to see your guy struggle. Has the Keppra affected his moods at all? If so, then he might want to consider taking a vitamin B complex supplement w. B6 to help. It's helped other people here with that particular "Kepprage" side effect.

I hope you feel free to explore the different forums, and chat, vent, or ask questions.

Best,
Nakamova

Hi Nakamova

Its hard to know if the anger issues are related to Keppra or whether it stems from suppressed anger or frustration. But yeah there are anger issues about once a month. What are the benefits of B6?

Catzy,

Welcome! Your gorgeous guy is lucky to have you!

I'm so sorry to hear about the bleed on his brain. That sounds awful. How is he feeling now?

Catzy --

Keppra is completely processed and excreted through the kidneys. While it's good that the body can dump all residue of the drug from the system, this can have the negative effect of causing a vitamin B6 deficiency. Vitamin B6 has a direct effect on serotonin levels, which has an effect on a person’s mood. So... taking a B6 supplement can be helpful if with the Kepprage and moodiness. The B vitamins are best taken in combination with one another rather than alone.

Hi Endless - he's good today. Seizure free for 1 1/2 weeks at the mo. I think I'm lucky to have him too :) We only know he has a bleed as he had to have an MRI as part of his bail conditions, so found this out a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully thats whats causing his seizures at the mo and we can get it fixed. Just a pain that it costs so much to get to the end of this tunnel.
Naramova - thanks heaps for the info on the B vitamin - very interesting.

Its great to find a place where people understand the frustrations of living with epilepsy - you really don't know what people are going through until you are actually living with it. Even though I don't have it myself, I feel his pain and his frustration. I see the lack of understanding of this illness constantly. He has just been charged for assaulting me because he slapped me during a rage and I made the mistake of calling the police. This is the only time he has assaulted me. Rather than help, they charged him with assault even though I asked them at the time not to because I felt his rage may be associated with Keppra. So another $350 fine and $74 court costs. How this helps I don't know. It just makes a hard life harder. Now his parole officer wants him to see a shrink. Its just one piece of shit after another to deal with. Apart from that we are probably the most affectionate couple I know LOL and most of the time we lead as normal a life as possible with all the restrictions.

Hi Catzy

Welcome, from another Aussie. Just a quick note to mention that I saw Vit B6 tablets in Chemist Warehouse vitamins section the other day. They caught my eye, but I couldn't remember why I should buy them, so didn't (I'm on 2x Mega B, and no Keppra anyway).

Hope this helps.

Chel
