My 5yr old son had his first seizure on monday blood tests, xtray and CT scan showed he was fine and we were discharged on tue. but he had a second one on wednesday. MRI showed he was fine but the EEG showed that he was prone to another seizure. He was put on anti-seizure medication yesterday.(today is friday) This whole experience is so scary for me as i dont know what to do/expect/treat my son who is very active and am hoping i can get support and comfort from this forum. Cheers

Hi ewaganagwa, welcome to CWE!

It can be very scary to see your child have s seizure, and to have him face a possible epilepsy diagnosis. At this point, this best thing is to help your son recover from the seizure (how is he feeling?), and to monitor how he feels on the medication. Sometimes it can take a while to get the dose right, or to find a medication that provides seizure control without problematic side effects. Make sure to ask his doctor what to watch out for with the medication.

Can you think of anything in particular that might have been a factor in his seizure. It's not always possible to find a primary cause, but sometimes you can identify other things that play a secondary role -- some folks have their seizures triggered by lack of sleep, low blood sugar, sensitivity to certain foods (like gluten or dairy) or food additives (like aspartame or MSG), flashing lights, etc. So it might help if there's something you can identify and avoid.

Hang in there. I hope you feel free to ask questions and explore the forum.

Best,
Nakamova

Thank you Nakamova,

Actually Jabali is fine, he does not seem affected at all as he just finds himself in hospital and has no clue what made him end up there. I think we( me, the dad and sister) are more worried about him than he is. but i believe it is now easier as we know how to react and take care of him incase of a seizure Today is day 2 of the medication and he seems to be responding well. He is not as "disoriented" as he looked yesterday. I guess as the doctor said he should live a normal life. on medication.
His tests also showed that his sinuses were infected and adenoids very enlarged i believe this could be his main cause of the seizures any other people had that as the main cause?
Thank you Ewaganagwa,

In rare cases, severe sinus infections can cause epilepsy, so that may be what happened with your son. It might also be the case that he had a predisposition to seizures, and the infection lowered his seizure threshold. (Stresses of one sort or another, including illness or infection, can trigger seizures in people who are vulnerable to them). Still another possibility is that the enlarged adenoids affected his breathing and sleep, which can be a seizure trigger as well. You should ask his doctors if they have considered a primary connection between his infection and the seizures, or whether the infection was a secondary trigger.

Often, kids "grow out of" their epilepsy, so I hope that after a few seizure-free years your son can try weaning off of the medication.

its been a while, since i was on the forum. We went to see a paediatric neurosurggeon and it turn out that the seizures we re caused by my sons fall and bump on his head...despite all the tests showing that he had no fracture, bleeding or tumor, his cells must have gone into a spasm and thus the seizures. He is on medication for 2 yrs. so we hope for the best.

How did they make the connection between the head injury and his seizures? Are they sure, or is it a guess on their part?

Anyway, I hope the meds do the trick, and that Jabali is stable from here on out.
