Hello everyone! My name is Brian Lund, I live in Wyoming and have had Epilepsy since birth which was December, 1960. I have now been seizure free since July 11, 2000 so put up with seizures and Epilepsy the first 39 1/2 years of my life. I have written and Published a Book titled: My Life with Epilepsy and Seizures and it is available in online book stores. I also have a Web Page to advertise the book and to help with education of Epilepsy and some day once I am able to I will let you know how to access it. Except I bet if you do a search for the Book using a search engine it may also give you the url for my web Page. I want to let people know I am here to always provide support to those that want it for as my tile to this says. What a relief it has been is no kidding. To be seizure free has been great.

Thank You and Bye for now: Brian Lund

Hi Brian, welcome to CWE!

It's great that you are seizure-free. Was there a particular treatment that made the difference?

Best,
Nakamova

The treatment that help me was Brain Surgery. Medications never did control my seizures and over the years from 1960 - 2000 I was a many different medications but none ever seemed to help. It was two Brain surgeries that I had. The first one was in 1985 they removed the right temporal lobe of my brain. The doctors at this time admitted to me there was seizure activity on both sides of my brain so that after the surgery I wouldn't be seizure free but certainly see a major reduction in the # of seizures I was having and yes that was exactly what happened after that surgery. But once again medication never helped to control my seizures after that surgery and in 1999 I was referred to a different Epilepsy treatment center for a second eval to see what maybe could be done. I was admitted in 2000 for testing including a fairly new test at that time called a grid placement surgery where they placed a grid in under my skull on the right side to better trace seizure activity. From this test they proved the Doctors in 1985 wrong that all of the seizure activity was on the right side of my brain. So on July 11, 2000 as I am going into the operating room the Surgeon to be doing the surgery says to me. Brian you are a very brave man to go through a second brain surgery. Now I don't want to scare you he said I just want to let you know the part of your brain I will be removing is the right Hippocampus that is no bigger than a nickel maybe a quarter at the most and if it would have been removed in the first surgery you would have been seizure free a long time ago. So yes it was thanks to newer technowledgy that I became seizure free and yes it has even advanced greatly since then even. So it took Brain surgeries for me to become seizure free. The right side of my head has been cut open a total of five times along the same scar. The first time was in 1985 for the right Temporal Lobectomy, then in May, 2000 for the grid placement surgery, then on July 11, 2000 for the Right Hippocampus surgery, then the fourth time was in October, 2001 when a Bone infection to the right side of my skull flared up and a section about 3 1/2 inches wide up and down and about 5 inches wide front to back of the skull bone on the side of my head had to be removed to get rid on the bone infection. Then a month after that surgery, it was cut open the fifth time to insert an artificial plate to work as my skull bone once they new the infection was gone. Yes it was Brain surgery that helped me being medications never did. But since 2000 there have been so many new meciations put on the market that there is three times the # of prescriptions available today compared to what was available when I was having seizure problems.

Thank You: Brian Lund

Hi Brian --

Wow! You've gone through a lot. I'm glad the second surgery did the trick. CWE members have a had a range of experiences with surgery -- some, like you, have gone under the knife more than once. Some have seen their seizures reduced, and some haven't. It's certainly a big step to consider.
