Hello all, I couldn't stop myself from registering when I read a complete thread started by sicily726 about weening off of keppra. I to am now on keppra xr 500mg 3 times a day, and it is kicking my ***. I've had focal seizures since I was 16, I'm 26 now and have been on 4 seziure meds since being diagnosed. of the 4 only 2 have caused me any problems, the first was tegratol, i hope im saying it right. it caused some severe mood changes, and the keppa xr im taking now, the side effects are killing me, i feel like i can't think straight, im drowse beyond belief, one minute i feel almost better than normal then i feel like laying on the floor in a ball. Any hoo I just wanna find a good way to prevent or cope with the side effects. And again hello to all.

Welcome Ecli Epi

Trust me, you're not the only person who wonders "why me?".

I"ve also been on keppra and so far its been the worst medication I've been on for side-effects (& I've been on a lot of meds). I know that Vitamine B6 helps the anger caused by keppra but I'm not sure if it works on the other side-effects. I'm sure we'll be hearing from the others soon who can tell us.

Meanwhile, make yourself at home & check out the rest of the site. Lots of good stuff here.

I HATE Keppra

I recall saying the same thing "Why me" when I was on Keppra. I was on it for only a month and got myself off. I would've been in divorce court for the rage it caused, a bum on the street since I wouldn't have been able to work due to pure exhaustion and no ability to think clearly and I would've been completely bald on top of it!

My advice: If you hate it that much call your neuro and switch to something that you can deal with or perhaps learn from those on here who know so much about holistic approaches BUT ALWAYS CONSULT your neuro before messing with your meds.

Howdy, and welcome!

I agree with KelVarQ -- contact your neuro about trying a different med. The AED merry-go-round is no fun, but it's all about quality of life. If Keppar is making you feel incredibly lousy then it is the wrong drug for you. In addition to finding the right med, you might want to consider trying diet or neurofeedback -- some people on the site have had success with those approaches, and have been able to reduce the amount of meds they are on.

I hope you get relief soon!

Best,
Nakamova

Ah, yup

get hold of your neuro, NOW. If it's driving you that batty, it's got to GO!!!

Keppra and I don't agree with each other, either, so don't feel bad. I didn't have the anger issues..........I had some weirder reactions. Like being the Energizer Bunny on Speed, and then seeing things in triplicate while they were rotating.....

Sometimes, we just have to get on that med merry go round until we find the right one, or the right combo......

Good luck, and welcome to CWE!

I'm doing the Keppra thing now, swapped out Topamax with it and I must say that for me it is the best seizure control I have had in years. I have had the mood issues but that is it. The seizures I am having are because I didn't sleep, didn't eat (hypoglycemia triggers me), or I am stressed or upset (worst trigger for me by far). As long as I manage those triggers I am seizure free with the Keppra. I love it!

I am very sorry to hear that it isn't working for you though!

My wife has just been through all of this as well. Only instead of Keppra, it was Depakote that was causing her all the problems. I made a list of about 10 side effects that were prominent since she started on Depakote. And those were just the ones I knew about it.

When a med isn't right it's pretty obvious. Also everyone is different so meds affect everyone in unique ways. A med that works great for some, might be an absolute nightmare for another.

As others have said, it comes down to a quality of life issue. You have to weigh the med effectiveness vs. the side effects. It's a give and take thing, but if either thing isn't working for you, you have to push for a change. At first I was nervous about asking my wife's doctor for a change, but he agreed with us that it's time to try something new. Ironically enough, she's been switched to Keprra.
