I was around 42ish...50 now. Mine were brought on by lack of nutrition to the brain. I have an eating disorder. That is pretty much under control, back up to 120 from 86. The seizures continue though....

Last year in June...out of nowhere, at age 40.

I have no family history, no cause has been found for them, etc.

I've also heard that later-in-life seizures are less common than earlier onset ones but it's not unheard of.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. Very interesting!

My first that I am sure of was at 20. May have had some form of seizures already in my teens?? Now 49, How old are you now Dave?
I was 56 when I started having seizures and I'm 62 now. With medication the seizures are pretty much under control.

I was 11 when I had my first seizure. I am 22 now and still have them occasionally. Yes, I think it is rare to start having seizures later in life. Do you know what triggered it for you?
No, I'm not sure what triggered my seizures. I knew something was going on before I had my first seizure, but didn't know what.

I had my first at 43. After the first one I started having plenty of them, regardless of which AED I took. The doctors subsequently discovered a cavernous malformation in my left temporal lobe which was causing the seizures. Apparently, its common for seizures to start later in life with this particular type of angioma. I had surgery in June 2010 to remove the malformation, and haven't had a seizure since then. I'm very grateful for that. I was happy to go a few days without one before. I'm also grateful I started having them later in life. There are plenty of people who developed epilepsy as children who have them the rest of their life. I only had them for 6 years, assuming my recovery is permanent.

Incidentally, have the docs determined any specific cause for your seizures?
No, the doctors haven't determined any specific cause for mine. During one episode while I was in the hospital the EEG showed I had epilepsy but I had three or four EEGs before that and nothing showed up. How did the doctors discover the cavernous malformation in your left temporal lobe?

I started taking seizures when I was turning 38. Thought it was just a part of getting younger!!!!

This is me as well, at age 38....however when I was a little kid I was diagnosed with psychomotor (petit mal/temporal lobe) epilepsy as a 3 yr old. I was put on dilantin and I grew out of it when I was 5. The dr told my mom that if the seizures ever came back, it would be during puberty- the hormones, etc. Hmmmm...

Don't know if my childhood and adulthood epilepsy is related or not...??.

I've been hearing a lot of stories, both here at these forums and some others from people I know or knew, and I may see about getting some thourough testing done. Today a lady at the local gas station told me about a friend that worked there. He had had one seizure and the doctors told him nothing was wrong and he could go back to work. Then he had another pretty bad seizure. Not sure what they told him after that one. When he had a third seizure it was a "grand mal" seizure and he just about killed himself and hurt his wife too. He was beating on a hot stove, throwing firewood around, pushing his wife, etc. Once he came out of the seizure he had no idea what happened, no idea why he was so beat up, no idea why his arms were burned, etc. After more testing they found blood clots in his lungs that were causing his seizures, or so they say. They put him on blood thinner and just to be safe, he's on a seizure medication too. The seizures did a lot of permanent damage to his brain and the blood clots probably would have killed him if they hadn't found them.

Also, dbrownpilot had a cavernous malformation that was discovered by an MRI. Too many missing pieces to the puzzle for me and I've never had an MRI (only a CT scan). I think it's time to have "everything" checked out by a "seizure specialist!"

I've had simple partials ever since I remember. Then first complex partial at the age of 16 or so and first tonic clonic when I was 17. I am 26 now.

I had my first secondarily generalized seizure when I was 34 and I'm 45 now. The complex partial part of my seizures happens so quickly that no one has ever been able to figure out what it is  I get no warning.

The neuro says it is a strong possibility that I have been having szrs most of my life, just no one knew that was what was going on. I have smell auras too. Just random phantom smells that pop up out of nowhere then flit away. I have had these as long as i can remember. I also zone out for brief periods. This is new as far as i know. Doc wont say one way or the other what it is.

I've had a lot of brain trauma throughout my life...somewhere around 6-8 concussions plus a car accident where all of the damage was to my head. Doc is pretty sure one of those is the guilty party. I have scars in my left temporal lobe which is what sets everything off.

I didn't get diagnosed with it until my late 30s'. But I am sure I started to get them in my early 20s'. Those doctors just took a long time figuring it out.:e:

15 but I didn't get diagnosed with Left Temporol Lobe Epilepsy until 2 years later.

I was in a bad car accident when I was in my early 20s. I was unconscious and suffered a concussion. My doctor also said there's a good possiblilty that has something to do with my seizures, but he can't say for sure.

33, I think I had 80ish the first day. simple partials. Hasn't gotten too much better since...

The first seizure we know for sure I had was when I was 15, though the doctors suspect that I'd been having them for a year without anyone noticing (they happen when I'm sleeping and I slept on a diffrent floor from the rest of my family). I scared the crap out of my family (Grand-mal seizure) and got an ambulance ride I really wish I could remember!

Started with absence seizures when I was about 8 from a head injury. Everyone thought I just was quiet and kept to myself. Not until they gradually started getting worse at age 30 did I seek medical advice. Turns out I have complex partials. Kept under control thankfully!

I was 15 when I had my first grand mal (or tonic clonic as I notice most call them here). I was in the shower on a school morning. Looking back, I suspect I had been having petit mals for several months. There was an old fluorescent light bulb in our bathroom that flickered a bit and I can remember telling momma a couple of times that my eyes jerked in the mornings when I brushed my teeth. Neither of us suspected epilepsy.

My daughter was 12 when she had her first, at home, shortly after getting out of bed.

My son was 1,5 when we noticed the first seizures. I think he had seizures before that age we but we didn't recognize them being seizures.
