My daughter was in and out of the hospital a yr ago with frequent vomiting and fevers.awhile later she was diagnosed with partial seizures by eeg.she has been on trilepitol for 3 months now and the seizures seem to be more frequent and longer the last cpl weeks.she will be admitted for a video eeg Jan 15 th.she will walk In circles open her mouth make grunting noise and move her arms.it almost looks like shes autistic but shes not.the weird thing is its like shes aware.she'll get angry if we ask about them.anyone else had this even when on medicine? And can autism show up on an eeg and look like seizures?

I don't have any answers, just wanted you to know you are not alone.

I have simple partial I don't have the vomiting that your daughter has.

All the brain meds are pretty powerful, and folks respond in different ways to them. Often it can be a matter of trial-and-error to find a med that works with minimal side effects. For some, meds aren't the answer at all -- see http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f32/neurofeedback-rebeccas-story-2733/

Increased seizures are listed as one possible side effect of Trileptal -- you should definitely let your daughter's neurologist know if you haven't already. The symptoms you describe sound like partial seizures (which can appear a bit like sleepwalking) rather than autism. Partial seizures are characterized by semi-impaired consciousness -- so it can seem that the person is aware of what's going on, even when they are not. Since the behaviors are only present during the seizures it seems unlikely that they are connected to autism -- but if you are concerned, definitely bring it up with your daughter's neurologist.

An EEG shows whether or not there are brainwaves present that are characteristic of epilepsy. Currently, there is no EEG test to diagnose autism, though there are some brainwave patterns that may be characteristic of autism (see http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_...ns-may-detect-signs-of-autism-in-2-year-olds/). These patterns are not the same as those found in epilepsy, so one disorder won't masquerade as the other.
