Hi guys! Monday I go in for a 5 day EEG/EKG monitoring study. What can I expect-besides being bored?! Am I going to be able to shower and such?? I'm not quite sure what to expect...

You probably won't be able to shower, and you'll need to call a nurse whenever you need to use the bathroom. You can go in alone, they just stand outside the door to make sure you're okay. Find out if you have a dvd player in your room, a lot of epilepsy monitoring units do, so you can take movies to watch. Take books, games, crafts, whatever you like to do to pass the time. Good luck!

Hi Jacquie,
Like Bandmom has already said you most likely won't be able to have a shower while in for the EEG. You will probably have to have sponge baths instead.
Sometimes it can be long days, especially if you sleep deprive so take plenty to keep you entertained eg - games, books, laptop.
Find out if there will be a TV in your room or like bandmom said dvd player.
Because of the wires attached to the electrodes it will be very hard to get anything over your head so be sure to wear clothes with buttons or zips on them eg - button down tops, jackets, button down Pyjama tops.

Good luck with the monitoring

You cant use mobiles in any hospital because it can cause problems with the machines. But take it with you anyway. As for a laptop it would depend on whether the particular hospital allows it.

Am I able to use cell phone or lap top computer??
You should be able to take a laptop but I think to recharge it you will have to someone else to recharge.

Most hospitals do let you use mobile phones in the rooms now.
When I had my Video EEG I wasn't able to talk on my mobile phone because I think it interfered with the machine or electrodes but I was able to use my mobile to send text messages & play games.

Jacquie -
It might be good idea to contact the hospital before you go in for you EEG to find out what you can or can not take.

Cell phone and laptop were both okay to use while my daughter was in the hospital, just not while plugged in to the wall. Like CQ said, someone else needs to charge it for you, usually in an outlet away from your bed, like the opposite wall.

I had a VEEG done in march 2011. I got to bring any dvds, since they had a dvd player along with a tv in the room... my cell phone, and lap top. They suggested I bring anything that will pass along the time. For the first day, it was all like any normal. But then after that first night, the seizures kicked in and I dont recall alot of what was going on during that time. My mom was there with me during the time. It was nice to have someone there with me to comfort me when I got scared and the seizures came on.

I possibly have simple partial seizures/autonomic seizures. I had an EEG done (48 hr ambulatory) in 2009 that showed abnormal activity in the left temporal lobe. I felt fine for a few years and now have these odd feelings/auras. I know I have been stressed out lately, so perhaps anxiety is playing a role too..? Thank you again for all your replies!

I have mostly simple partial seizures. Have you ever had a tonic-clonic seizure? I went a couple years with nothing until my simple partials started picking up, and finally had a full blown seizure. Since then I'm on meds, and they've decreased, but yes, anxiety can definitely play a role. I know when I'm more stressed and not getting enough sleep, they get worse. One other thing I've found too is that I'll get an aura, and that will kinda make me anxious or nervous, which makes it worse, and then it ends up being much longer than necessary (this is when you'll see me taking Klonipin to ease the anxiety, and it usually works)

Hi there, I take .5mg of Ativan when I start feeling "weird." Last night was awful for me; I was overtired then started getting dizzy while falling asleep, palpitations, short of breath, along with a weird tightness feeling in my stomach. After all this, anxiety sets in!
