is there a siezure out there that also has a blackout effect with it ?

For i recently had a couple blackouts & it also felt like a siezure but i wasn't sure .

Please help me on this for it's scaring me thank you -- dave from kentucky.

Dear Dave ,
Yes , seizures can present as blackouts but so can other diseases. can you give me more details , as in
1) do you have any history of hypertension or diabetes ( in you or your family)?
2) When you " blackout" does it happen when you're stressed or after drinks or do you just fall down without knowing why... describe please in your own words
3) Did any third person see you when you blacked out. can you have them describe it.

Seizures that one has when unconscious are called complex seizures and are easily amenable to treatment.
However , Blackout can also occur as part of TIAs ( trasient ischaemic attacks , a minor form of strokes that last for less than a day , anywhere from one minute to 23hrs). This is why i need to know if you're hypertensive.
Have you had any residual neurological symptoms after the attacks? like being unable to talk or move a limb or wink or smile for some time after an attack?

You need some investigations , starting with an EEG , MRI and some blood work.
Feel free to message with any questions , I'm not a neurologist , but i can help a bit.

Dave - when I started have seizures - complex partials - I did NOT black out. All the weird stuff told me I was going to have a seizure so I got ready and watched stuff happen. I could not speak or understand ALL speech but I was "mostly" awake.

Later (on the newer meds) I started "blacking out 100%" ... no aura, (no TC) just sitting or standing completely still but "blacked out". I was "gone" for maybe 30-45 seconds......
Maybe it was 60 seconds . I don't know. Then I woke up and was confused. I could easily move - no more swallowing or licking lips but speech was very difficult.

Does that resemble what you're talking about?

I do

black out with mine.......but they are tonic clonics, and I'm in some stage of the sleep cycle. Then, I wake up after they're done......who knows how long that is.........and crawl back into bed for another 18 to 24 hours.....

I have complex partials and I do "blackout" in that I have no memory of anything that I do or that happens around me for 20-30 minutes. Before I knew it was seizures, I would call it extreme sleepwalking!

well i cant be sure . but i guess the answer would be yes because im blacked out every time i have a seizure but then again i have tonic clonic seizures

Been there, through it all - and read carefully:

2 things:

You could have had a Tonic Clonic with a Todd's Paresis that
followed after it (which is also known as Todd's Paralysis).

or

You could have had a T.I.A. (Transient Ischemic Attack)

===========

But it could have also been other medical issues, such as
low blood pressure, high blood pressure, sugar levels, etc,
that can trigger or off-set medical issues that can backfire
and lead a domino effect.

===========

Now the above two that I had posted - which can be a
complicated issue, because I've had BOTH - they can result
numbness, tingling, paralysis, etc - where it is almost hard
to discern the two and two. Especially for someone who has
Epilepsy/Neurological and a Cardiology Medical History. That
complicates things.

I am not a Medical Doctor, but this needs to be taken in
very seriously, for as one grows older, medical problems can
change ~ likewise so can seizures, unfortunately!

So you need to be evaluated and monitored very closely.

What can be even more insulting is - the end result being
a mere side-effect of an AED or AEDS!
With the titration of the dosage being "too high", and needs
to be adjusted, or your body had developed some tolerance
and/or some resistance to one or more AED.

Having implied this, as stated, I am not a Medical Doctor, but
these are common issues where you need to be scheduled for
an appointment as soon as possible.

Because if it were a T.I.A. - you do not want to put yourself
in dire risk! And if you had a Tonic Clonic with Todd's Paresis
(or Todd's Paralysis) - then you need to be re-evaluated.

Just my humble opinion here, because I've been through it.

NO I KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING BUT I FELT LIKE I WAS IN A DIFFERENT PLACE AWAY FROM MY FIANCEE TO WWHOM I LIVE WITH SINCE DEC 19Th 2007

then it's not a blackout. if you felt " away from your normal self" it is depersonalisation. There are many causes of feeling like this . Ranging from
Drugs (pot, other cannabinoids) , side effects of some drugs , temporal lobe epilepsy, anxiety disorder , panic disorder etc. Get yourself checked out both by a neurologist and by a psychiatrist.
