Just been reading about this, but, apparently it is quite a rare form of seizure, so rare that some professionals doubt its existence.

I know it is unwise to self diagnose, but, it does seem to fit my symptoms over the years. I have had upset stomachs, diarrhoea, colicky symptoms. Had what I suspect was a seizure following a bout of sickness 8 years ago (bit my tongue) and then in March this year had sick and diarrhoea then had a grand mal which I didn't seem to come out of and had to be sedated! (sorry to repeat my story for those who have read it!).

I just felt the need to post after reading about this abdominal epilepsy. I go to see the neurologist on the 10th July. I have been ok since, no seizures where I pass out, but, have had occasional bouts of unexplained diarrhoea. WHen I do I take it easy for the day if I can, which I know sounds pathetic to some, but, it was diarrhoea and vomiting that preceded my grand mal and so I always get a bit nervous it might be happening again. I have read that these symptoms could be an aura.

lots of links

Gosh, just seen lots of links to people posting similar symptoms. I am not imagining things then! :woot: Not that I want the symptoms, but, I want to understand my body and what is going on.

Thanks again for this wonderful site

Juanne, my daughter has always complained a lot about things like nausea and stomach cramps, even in the three and a years after diagnosis when she had no obvious seizures. I have been wondering if it is connected to E x

Just as it is not wise to self-diagnose, it is equally not wise to try to diagnose someone on line, right? But having said that, your intestinal symptoms sound a whole lot like mine. I have celiac disease, and my seizures are most likely tied to neurological manifestations of this condition. Many doctors do not consider celiac when someone complains of abdominal/intestinal issues, but it you ask for blood testing (it is usually called IgA or sometimes IgG) it is the first step toward finding out if you have celiac disease. If this test is positive, the next step is endoscopy. BUT, you have to still be eating gluten to get reliable results for both these tests.

I have abdominal epilepsy, and I must say it took a really long time to be diagnosed. It can also be called autonomic epilepsy, which is what my neuro called it. I recently, jan/feb of this year, began aed's and almost all of my symptoms disappeared overnight. I don't have diarrhea, vomitting, or even nausea. I have had to switch meds several times, and during the switch I will have episodes of the "gastric rising" , but everything evens out pretty quickly. Good luck to you and I hope you get some answers soon. Btw, the majority of my grand mals( tonic clonics) happened just after an abdominal episode too- it can be frightening.

Thank you all for the replies to this post. I am sorry for the lateness in thanking you. I didn't manage to get back for a while following the initial post as we have had a scrambled pc, (bit like my head) but, I am back on now, as I have access to a laptop and as I said, just wanted to thank you all for taking the time to reply.
