Hi!

I've had E. for 37yrs now, and have tried taken just about all of the medications there is out there. Which none of them have helped to control my seizures. If that is not bad enough I also have tried just about all of the anti depression meds. there is to take as well. I'm tired of all the different side effects, and believe me many of them have had the worst side effects possible. I've come to a conclusion that there is no medicine that's going to help control my seizures. Although I already told my neuro that I'm going to stay at the meds I'm at. Only because they are not causing any serious side effects. The only side effects that it's causing me that I'm not happy with is that my sex drive has decreased really bad. I don't know if it's the seizure meds plus the anti depression meds mixed together or not. I've heard that anti depression meds can cause a person to have a low sex drive. So I've been thinking about trying herbs. Only because I've heard that some of them are helpful with depression, anxiety, and the issue I'm dealing with among others. I know in the old days natural herbs were what they use to use to help heal many illnesses. Yet the real question I want to know is has anyone of you ever tried to take any type of herbs for any reason? If so were there any type of side effects? By the way I'm trying to get answers, and advice here instead of from my doctors. Only because I want to hear how it could work from someone who has experienced it. Not from someone who has read up the information from a book or a computer. Sorry I'm not trying to sound awful about that, but like I said I've been dealing with these different side effects, and medication for many yrs. now. That I know the doctors don't even know all the answers, the right ones, as well as the wrong ones. I sure hope I can get the advice I need. Thank you!

Hi modlar --

I moved your post to The Foyer so folks could see it and welcome you properly. Welcome!

I'm sorry you haven't been able to find an anti-seizure med that works for you. I can't give you specific advice on which herbs to try for your condition(s), but I can recommend "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" as a great starting point for your research. See

Be very careful if you do decide to try herbal remedies, and keep your doctor in the loop. Not only can the effects be as unpredictable and variable as they are with pharmaceuticals, but because herbal medicines are often unregulated you might not even be getting what's on the label. See http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/05/science/herbal-supplements-are-often-not-what-they-seem.html?_r=0

You might want to check out alternative (non-med) treatment approaches described here: http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/index.php?p=alternative-treatments

Always check with your doctor but i have found 25mg. of good quality DHEA REALLY increases my sex drive. If your a male you may need more. Just make sure it's a high quality supplement. I like Life Extension supplements

I've had E for over 30 years and tried nearly every med for seizure + experienced anxiety and have had some bad times with depression. I was seeing a neuropsychiatrist who had me try many anti-depressants. He said with my type of seizures, I needed an SSRI + a tricyclic anti-depressant. It seemed to help with the depression. And at the time, sex was the least of my problems. I've never tried any herbal stuff because I'm already on enough junk between my AEDs and a bunch of other meds for other problems.
Just my :twocents:.
