Hi everyone
Jeff here, male, 54, licing in NYC, native.
Began having seizures in the USAF in 1975, no aura, like clockwork every 30 days. Was put on Dilantin & Phenobarbital, then Dilantin & Mysoline, then finally in 1992 Dilantin & Tegretol, when seizures stopped. Recent dosage was Dilantin 100mg morning & evening, Tegretol 200 mg morning & evening.
After 18 years of being controlled, I had a seizure, thankfully I was with friends. This seizure was different, I had an aura all morning until seizure at 2PM.
Dosage was increased to Dilantin 200mg 3 times a day, & Tegretol 225mg morning & afternoon, 300mg at night.
So I decided to take my medication every 8 hours: 12 midnight, 8AM, 4PM, to insure proper level in system at all times.
This is not easy having to deal with this all over again, after 18 years... But I must live as if it will never happen again, but must live with precautions.
I have no choice right...?!
Thanks for letting me vent...

Hi, Jeff.

Welcome to the Forum!

I'm so sorry to hear your seizures are back. Especially after being seizure-free for 18 years.

Yeah, you are right. We have no choice, but... there are several people in here who are experts on alternative methods, if you can identify any root causes for your seizures, like hypoglycemia, Hanson's Disease, Celiac's, etc. For most people there's no rhyme or reason to their seizures, for some dietary changes or other approaches help. I really want to try neurofeedfback.

There has never been any identifable triggers to my seizures, and my condition was always labled idiopathic seizure disorder. But thanks for your response.

Hello Jeff...welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear that your seizures returned after going seizure free after 18 years, but I am glad to hear that you were with friends who knew what to do and that you seem to be very accepting of it (more so than I would probably be) and are taking your medications on a regular basis.

As Endless said, there is quite a large section on complementary therapies on here that you might want to try as well as an add on to your medication.

I hope that this recent seizure was just a fluke and you again can go seizure free for a long time period.

DO keep

a seizure journal though. I am one of those who is affected by food, specifically by celiac disease. And it affects some of my seizure types more than others. (I have 4, all of them nocturnal.)

Welcome to CWE, by the way. I'm sure you're going to like it here. There's plenty of friends to make, information to find, and a great dinner party as well. Mr B has built us an AWESOME home to hang out in.

Feel free to kick up your feet and relax--you'll find plenty to do, I promise. I've burnt the coffee AGAIN--I don't think I'll EVER learn!--and hopefully one of the guys will bring some decent stuff around soon!

Take care!

Thanks for your kind words, I have started a seizure journal, and the only outstanding entry for the day before was stress. Which we all know is a trigger.

I have an appointment on Nov 11th with my Neurologist & then we will discuss testing & a treatment plan.

I will check out the "Complementary therapies" section & see what I can apply to my life.

Again, thank for your support.
