Hello...I was wondering if anyone knew about the connection between seizures and antihistamines. I've read a few articles and blogs that said that antihistamines can actually increase one's chance of seizing. I have about 12 seizures a month (every month!) That's my normal amount, but lately I've been taking pseudoephedrine for allergies, and my seizures have been a LOT worse...more intense. Is it possible that the pseudoephedrine could be making my seizure threshold lower? :twocents:

It is worth checking if you are allergic to any colourings or coatings of the pill.
I was on an antihistamine for years, but I had to change because I suddenly found out that I had a allergy to pill coating and that made my sinus' swollen and such which increased infection risk and therefore brings the threshold down. X

Hi and welcome,

Every time has put me on an antis for allergy I always have an in increase in my seizures. needless to say I will not take any of them.

Yup, antihistamines can lower seizure threshold, and pseudoepehdrine can too.
Below is a link to a list of drugs that can lower seizure threshold:

Not everyone reacts the same, but if you've noticed an increase in seizures coinciding with your pseudoephedrine use, it's a pretty good bet that it's to blame.

Thank you all!

Thanks to everyone! I stopped taking the peudoephedrine, won't go near any others. SInce I stopped the antihistamines and other cold meds I have only had 1 seizure...a quickie. A few auras...but no TC, no dropping, no blackouts. I think I've found a trigger that I didn't know I had! Yipeeeee!

Never thought finding something that could CAUSE my seizures would make me happy! But it's kinda like avoiding something you could trip on, isn't it? Hee hee hee! :woot:

I know how you feel.

I have some many triggers that I too didn't know until I read it on this forum.

This forum has helped me in so many areas. I'm hoping the same for you.

I was having the same problem as I have bad sinus problems that always have to get prescribed nasal spray and antibiotics, but last time I went to my General Practitioner, she told me to only get over the counter "Corisidan HBP" when I have the flu or cold and only take one pill at a time. These are for people especially with high blood pressure, we with Epilepsy have the same issues when it comes to colds and flu, something to do with the way our blood vessels become constricted or something. But I took it for a week and felt fine. Thankfully I don't have that cold any more.
