I am new to the forum. my wife started having seizures about a year and a half ago. She was fasting and exercising and really threw her body out of whack. she started having seizures and so far most doctors just want to label her epileptic and stop looking for answers and give her pills. She has had several eeg's and a three day and MRI's catscans and such with no signs showing. We live in Louisiana and would very much like to find a doctor interested in finding the real cause. I feel like it is likely something that can be treated and fixed and possibly not continue to have the issues. What is the best known doctors or facilities to have seizures analyzed. the closer to louisiana the better but i am not above some travel if it means finding somebody who will get to the real cause. thanx in advance.

Robbymore21,

warm welcome to CWE...

have you considered a visit to a naturopath - NOT a medical doctor?

Your wife is very blessed you care so much - DO NOT GIVE UP NOR GIVE IN....

Hi Robbymore21,

Generally speaking, a regional epilepsy center (such as http://www.medschool.lsuhsc.edu/epilepsy_center/)may have neurologists with more experience at diagnosing (or ruling out) epilepsy. If they rule out epilepsy, it's possible they may be able to refer your wife to other specialists for evaluation.

A few questions: What kinds of seizures has your wife been having? Has she been evaluated by her regular doctor for blood sugar issues or nutritional deficiencies? Has she been evaluated for cardiac issues? Does she keep a symptom diary recording when the seizures occur, as well as other information that might help identify triggers?

She has had eeg ekg brain mri catscans lots of bloodwork. She is officially diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia. We have talked to a neurologist in houston who refered us to the endocrinologist after i made my wife monitor blood sugar and fiund it dropping into the low 30s a few times. The endocrinologist ran test on blood sugar and found the reactive hypoglycemia. Meanwhile the whole time i asked each doctor if it was possible she had low hormones since the seisures and volitility in blood sugar levels corosponded to roughly the same time in her monthly cycle. I finally conned a gynocologist to run a full hormone panel on her by saying the endocrinologist in houston wanted to look into hormones next. It revealed her have significantly low hormone levels. The low endocrinologist has said that bc she dis that extreme fasting it likely messed up her hormones and they shiuld return to normal with time rest and propper diet. So far most of the seizures could have been blood sugar drops we really dont know for sure bc having a seizures releases adrenalin and cortisol which raises the blood sugar so checking her sugar after the seizures doesnt give us any info.

I think they did test her for diabetes. I have read about the catatonics prior already. I have done an extensive amount of online google searching and studying. Having a hard time getting a doctor that will try to figure out what could be causing it all. I have a hard time buying that she just all of a sudden at 33 coincidentally became epileptic at the same time she fasted and messed up her hormones without some relation to it

My seizures started when I was 23 years old. I didn't have a head injury, meningitis, encephalitis, etc. It was also around that "time of month" when I had my first TC seizure and ended up in the hospital with a severe injury from the seizure. I hadn't been fasting. So for some, seizures do all of a sudden appear in our lives.

I just hate to start a lifetime of medicine without exhausting all correctable possibilities first. I had hoped somebody knew a good specialist to reccommend. We mainly have general neurologists here who dont seem interested in trying to figure anything out they just want to medicate.

For an epileptologist, here is a site that may be able to help:

http://www.aesnet.org/find-a-dr/find-a-doctor-epilepsy-com

I go to an epileptologist as well as an endocrinologist at an academic teaching hospital. Therefore, they are in the same system and can communicate with each other about my condition(s), meds, etc.

Maybe this type of facility can get to the root of your wife's problem(s).

I found one in houston we may try. Makoto Kawai. Younger doctor at methodist neurological institute. I wonder if anyone on here happens to have experience with them.
