In other lists and forums that I read there is a wealth of information about Bio-Med treatments. Some here at CWE are willing to discuss it, however I find that many are already on the AED merry-go-round, which makes it a challenge to consider alternatives such as this.

I truly see a direct link to many of what my daughter experiences, and what is being discussed in the ASD community. Her older brother has high functioning Asperger Syndrome, and her other brother has an auto-immune disorder called vitiligo.

I am sharing this website for those that also are considering a new approach.
Biomedical autism intervention has been highly effective for many children on the spectrum. While some see just minor improvements, many children have overwhelming success - even complete recovery from autism. Obviously, there is no guarantee your child will have a full recovery, but many do, and…isn’t it worth trying to see if your child, like so many others will respond so well to these treatments. AutismActionPlan.org is not meant to replace your doctor. For some people, a biomedical autism specialist is not an option, due to geographic or economic barriers. (Did you know an initial visit and follow up with a biomedical autism doctor can cost around $1,000?)

For those people, an AutismActionPlan.org membership can get them started on a biomedical intervention program for their children, right away. Other people, who are already seeing a doctor, use their membership for additional research, information and contact with parents and specialists in between doctor visits. These people also claim they are able to make their doctor's visits more productive, as they now come to appointments fully prepared, informed, and ready for the next part of their child's treatment.

Whether you want to use AutismActionPlan.org alone or with your physician, your membership empowers you to take the actions you need to guide your child successfully through biomedical autism intervention.

I truly hope that you do not see this as an advertisement. This doctor shares much of his knowledge with free web discussions.

It is the beginning of what I see as a new approach to medicine.

It might help if the term "bio-med treatment" was defined.

bi·o·med·i·cal (b-md-kl)
adj.
1. Of or relating to biomedicine.
2. Of, relating to, or involving biological, medical, and physical sciences.

To check peer-reviewed medical literature, it is as simple as doing a Google search of “pubmed” going to that site and doing a search for “virus autism.” Many of these papers included references to specific viruses, inflammation, and autoimmunity. Several of them specifically state the onset of the disorder surrounded the onset of the infection. Three case reports showed late onsets of 11 [1], 14 [2], and 31 [2] years old.

I think the average person does not think of infections having a neurological effect, but if you just think about how your brain feels when you have the flu or how a dog acts with rabies we can begin to see quick examples.

In the case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or Tourettes Syndrome it was commonly believed to be brought on by stress. Due to some wonderful work by Sue Swedo, M.D., at the National Institute of Health many cases were found to be the immune systems response to a Strep infection (PANDAS) [29].

Other infections that are linked to neurological issues include: Rabies, Lyme, HIV, Herpes, Polio, Coxackie, Rubella, Borna, Epstein’s Barr (EPV), Eterovirus, Influenza, Measles, Westnile - Borrelia, Shingles, Anthrax, Meningococcus, Mycobacterium, Syphilis, Malaria, Chlamydia, Ricketts, and Candidiasis.

Infections that are in implicated in the medical literature as causing or triggering cases of autism include: Herpes, Rubella, Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, Shingella, Borna, Malaria, Blastocystics, Varicella, Cytomegalo Virus (CMV), Syphilis, Toxplasmosis, Neurocysticercosis, and Clostridium.
In reference to Clostridium, an interesting study was conducted by Dr. McFabe that showed injecting rats with propionic acid caused the onset of autism symptoms [32]. A main source of proprioic acid is Clostridia, a bacterial infection common in autism.

Common symptoms start popping up, eczema, dental problems, diarrhea, constipation, reflux, food cravings, bloating, fatigue, aggression, sleep difficulties, “spaciness,” agitation, inappropriate laughing and “stim” behaviors including hand movements, toe walking, and spinning objects or self.

It generally follows the DAN philosophy, which involves trying to treat the underlying
causes of the symptoms of autism, based on medical testing, scientific research, and clinical experience, with an emphasis on nutritional interventions. Many of the DAN treatments have been found by listening to parents and physicians

Currently, there are four broad areas of focus which conceptualize the possible biomedical causes of autism spectrum disorders. Most researchers and practioners feel that all four areas are intertwined and that each affects the other. Gastrointestinal abnormalities, immune dysfunctions, detoxification abnormalities, and/or nutritional deficiencies or imbalances have all been suggested as potential biomedical “triggers” for autism spectrum disorders.

(Sounds a bit like what we talk about occasionally here..)

The Autism Research Institute has documented more than 1,000 cases of autism recovery through approaches that include infection and toxin management.

Hi This is Nancy and i am newly registered in this site. I can not know in this topic before seeing this site after that i will know more information about this topic.Every one to take some drugs and alcohol this is not good for health so do not take alcohol most of the people they know alcohol is not good for their health and that cost is very high but the people want the drugs and alcohol. The family members suffer many problems but they do not understood they always want alcohol. Please try to understand your family members and try to forgot that habit. but they are attracted by those items so that type of people please visit this below link.

Again if you consider neurological disorders within the same family, within the same community, this article is of interest to all of us, even though it is directed at those dealing with autism. We are seeing positive results with seizure disorders when specific foods are eliminated from the diet. Vitamin and mineral supplementation also helps with seizure control.

Many times a parent does not have an indication their child might have autistic spectrum characteristics until they have a seizure and end up in the hospital.

I have a child on the autistic spectrum. He has high functioning aspergers. He has intestinal issues as a 23 yr old. I have a daughter with seizures. She has had a history of intestinal issues. I had a 30 yr history of migraines which run in my family. I have another child with an auto immune disorder called vitiligo. Does gluten sensitivity run in my family. I don't know, but there is a good indication that it does.

So if there are seizures running in your family, or other unexplained indications of medical issues, (eczema, yeast infections, dental decay, stomach problems...etc), you might consider that treating E bio-medically might be to your advantage.

A Biomedical Autism Doctor Explains the Safety Factors of Biomedical Therapies.

Are biomedical therapies for children with an autism spectrum disorder safe? Is there any risk to doing therapies such as diet (gluten and casein-free), supplements (multivitamin/minerals, calcium and magnesium, fish oil, etc.) or even Methyl-B12 therapy?

Implementing biomedical autism interventions such as the gluten and casein-free diet or nutritional supplements can be an effective process for many children with an autism spectrum disorder. The question is are they safe, or are there any inherent dangers with biomedical therapy?

The simplest statement to give is, "diet and supplement support is safe and effective." Like anything in medicine there is no guarantee of absolute safety or side effect-free therapy. Each child is different in their genetic and biochemical make-up and their reaction to therapy will vary. For example, when incorporating a new supplement such as Methyl-B12 (which helps many kids with language, social, attention and focusing issues) hyperactivity can be stimulated for some in the beginning. This reaction is not life-threatening or toxic, but some kids can respond this way - usually it is short-lived.

The same can be seen with dietary changes such as gluten and casein removal. Some children have such strong chemical reactions to these food items that when they are removed from their diet significant aberrant behavior can occur such as irritability, aggression and/or restlessness, sleeping problems, etc. Again, these behaviors usually subside on in a few days. These are not life-threatening or toxic reactions, but do indicate that gluten and casein are causing some abnormal chemical alterations - which they are known to do. On the flip side, many times positive gains are also seen such as improved eye contact, language skill, cognitive awareness, and others when these therapies are implemented.

Contrast this with common drug therapy such as Risperdal. Risperdal is a drug often prescribed for autism to help with aggressive behavior. It can be helpful in some, but the side effect profile is lengthy and in some can cause permanent neurological damage.

In my experience, biomedical intervention through the use of diet and nutritional support has never created toxic reactions or side effects that are seen with many pharmaceutical drugs. In fact, in many cases biomedical treatment has lessened the need for drug therapy all together in many children.

Don't let ANYONE tell you there is nothing you can do to help your child. Autism really is treatable! Start your child down the road to recovery from autism. Biomedical Autism treatments and therapies have resulted in many, many children improving - even losing their autism-spectrum disorder diagnosis.

Please check out the webpage as it is very informative.

Childhood Neurological Disorders (NDs) are typically diagnosed by professionals with psychology and psychiatry backgrounds. Parents are often told that their children's diagnosis is the result of genes and is psychological in nature. Typical "psychological" manifestations of these NDs in children may include delayed speech, lack of eye contact, impaired or non-present social skills, shyness, perseverative behavior (doing the same thing repeatedly), delayed gross or fine motor skills, sensory integration issues (sound and touch sensitivity, etc.), not responding to one's name, inflexibility with transitions, and major, often unexplained, changes in mood.
Yet, the physical or medical issues that our children often share are rarely noted or discussed. Typical physical manifestations of children with NDs may include food allergies and eczema, general gastrointestinal distress, constipation and diarrhea, yeast overgrowth, immune system disregulation, and sleep disturbances. Typically, proper testing would also reveal high levels of environmental toxins relative to neurotypical children.
What has happened to our children? We believe our children's bodies are overwhelmed by a combination of heavy metals (mercury, lead aluminum), live viruses (particular from their vaccines), and bacteria. These toxins serve to slow or shut down normal biochemical pathways in the body and lead to the physical and mental manifestations we call NDs. Perhaps the best description of what happens to our children that we have read is Autism: A Twisted Tale of Virus and Thimerosal, by Dr. Amy Yasko.
Biomedical intervention for NDs is based on the belief that the psychological symptoms of NDs are a product of the physical issues the child is experiencing and that addressing the physical issues will lead to an improvement in those psychological symptoms. (We were very pleased to read the recent Cover Story in Discover Magazine that clearly spells out that autism is "not just in the head" but may actually originate in the gut and from environmental toxins.)
