Haven't been on this forum in a long while... Going back to April 2016 I've had some, well a lot of stress with husband and it just got me one morning I wake up jump in the shower and next thing I know I'm in a robe, wet on my sofa with my 19 year old daughter and a paramedics waking me up. My face hair, body had blood all over. Bathtub looked like a murder scene. They rushed me to the emergency room and they had to stitch up a cut while I watched [emoji30] after they told me my nose was broken and I would need surgery to fix it. Had surgery after almost two months and I had to wear a cast on nose while they inserted a nose stent for an entire week. I couldn't breathe right or clean my nose or sleep right. All because I had a seizure in shower. I don't always get auras so I hadn't known...it's so depressing just needed to vent.

Hi hillygirl,

I'm so sorry that you broke your nose I wish you only the best. I've had seizures while taking a shower many times. I've fallen a couple of times but I've been lucky I wasn't hurt just a little sore. I spoke to my Epileptologist about having seizures when I'm showering and he told me the reason why it is happening is because the hot water is firing up the neurons in the brain which in turn can trigger seizures for some people. After my Dr. told me this I cut back the temp of the water and it hasn't happened in a long time, you may want to do the same thing. I wish you only the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Hi Hillygirl,

I am so so sorry you had a seizure in the shower. I certainly can relate because I had my first TC seizure coming out of the shower. I fell and hit the hot water, suffering 1st and 2nd degree burns on my back and right arm. I was hospitalized for two months and had many surgeries. So be VERY careful in the BATHROOM and the KTCHEN. They say those two rooms are the most dangerous places in the home for those with E.

Check this out for info on E and safety in the home:
http://www.epilepsy.com/get-help/staying-safe/safety-home

A few safety tips:
~To give some privacy, place an occupied sign on the bathrrom door instead of locking it.
~Hang the bathroom door so that it swings outward (into the hall or bedroom). This prevents the door from being blocked if a person falls during a seizure.
~Sing in the shower so people know you’re okay.
~Take showers instead of baths.
~Make sure shower and bath drains work properly so water doesn’t build up.
~**Keep water temperature low to avoid burns.
~Use nonskid strips in tub or shower - everyone should use these!
~Use a shower curtain instead of a shower door, it's easier to get in and help someone if they fall in the shower.
~Use tub rails or grab bars.

For people who fall during a seizure or have frequent seizures:
~Use a shower chair or sit on bottom of tub and use hand held shower nozzle.
~*Take showers when someone else is in the house.

My epileptologist said my seizure happened because I hadn't taken my meds yet in the morning, plus it was my very 1st TC, so I wasn't medicated properly yet. And it was that "time of the month" for me, so my hormones play a part for me in my seizures. Did they do a CBC at the ER? I'm sure they must have. Has your regular dr. done a hormonal check to see if all is ok..... your thyroid, your estrogen, progesterone, etc? Plus, did they check your blood sugar level? In the morning, it could be low, therefore causing seizures for some.

Hang in there!!

Outch.yes it not nice when summit like that happening my fear is teeth.i felt myself going down had second to thinkprotect teeth I did but broke leg.I don't always have aura just lately I not had aura for sometime just quick down.alto last week using laser light on eye and right side of body out of my control and needed head neck and head held stop shaking and jerking. Then went see Lazarus strob lighting most intense i ever seen but prepared for it as walk on hot coal see it but had problems coming home and nice lady helped

Hello. Sorry to hear about the seizure & injury. I know you mean. My complex partial seizures are VERY dangerous for me--no auras. I have severely burned myself--2nd & 3rd degree--many times--most recently 2 weeks ago (1/14). They actually thought my family members were abusing me last time, so I haven't gone to the doctor!!
I've also had incidents in the shower, so I no longer shower when alone at home.

Also had stress of husband causing me big problems you have my emphy on that one.Once walked out of door with suitcase things improved until I got married again

i busticated a front tooth due to a faceplant into the floor. i feel for you. A whole lot of blood noted by witnesses. Sorry to hear about your situation.

i was told to avoid baths; i also avoid showers because i'm vulnerable then. in general, i have no auras/signs to tell me i'm gonna have a seizure. if you're feeling weak or odd, take to the floor before the floor takes you.

I also won't bath same reasons only shower. My local service are putting hand rails on bath and shower not sure be much good for my e but good on eye sight problems the grab rails may give you seconds whip plug the shower grab rail second to hold it drop to floor less violently but that taking a guess.i rather have shower with someone else in house husband useless I had bad asthma attack once and he not notice I fighting for life had to crawl to phone ask for help when ambulance arrived he wondered why

Stress can be a HUGE seizure trigger for me. If I'm going through a stressful time I'm almost certain to have a seizure. If your are having a good bit of stress you might want to have someone in the bathroom with you while you are showering. Have them ask you a question you need to answer every few minutes so they know you are ok.

I've only fallen out of the shower twice during a seizure. Luckily I didn't hurt myself bad either time but I didn't knock the sink away from the wall during one of them. I really don't like taking a bath. I don't get auras so I'm afraid I'll roll over in the tub and drown. I'd rather fall out of the shower than do that. This is just my opinion though.

I know that stress is a major factor for me, too. Even if I'm not consciously thinking about something that happened recently--like after an argument. I may have just ignored whatever went on at the time, but it probably did affect me.
