I've been on keppra for 3 days now and have noticed a marked drop in myoclonic jerks. Could the keppra be working this quickly? Our could it be the valium I was treated with in hospital 5 days ago? I only ask because when I went to hospital for wobbly legs they all but ceased after being treated with valium for that.

Also my old neuro on our last appointment ordered a sleep deprived eeg but didn't change my meds even though I was still seizing. The new neuro deceased my lamictal and added the keppra. Is it possible my old neuro didn't change my meds to increases the chances of a result on my sleep deprived eeg? Would this have been a safe course of action?

Oh, I'm so confused!

Maidenminx, I honestly don't know if that could be the Keppra. More likely a combo of it & the Valium. I hope you have good luck with the Keppra & the new dr.
Give them both a chance.

Keppra leaves/builds in the system very quickly, so it can be raised and lowered much faster than most other seizure medications. It also tends to take effect quicker - for the same reason. It's possible the Keppra could be working in as little as three days, but it's also possible it could be your other medications. :)

For me Keppra started right away, i noticed effects within 3 hours, now my body metabolizes meds and foods quickly mind you so i can tell quickly when meds and foods dont agree! So yes it is possible the Keppra is working.
I agree with Silat on both degrees it could be both I've never had valium so i cannot give you any personal input on that med.
Hope this helps!
Mike

For me, after I was pulled off all medications prior to my VEEG last year, (I was on Keppra and Carbatrol) then put back on the Keppra, within days, like id say 3 days I wasnt having any more seizures. My last dose of medication was on sunday night, that next morning I was admited, before given my morning dose of medications. I was off all medications for 3 1/2 days. No medications on monday, tuesday, wednesday, and on thursday they gave me my night dose of medication. So I was on Keppra again starting thursday night, and took it all day friday, and was released that day. The next day, after getting home, I woke up to have 6 seizures in half an hour. Those combo of seizures were my last seizures since being on Keppra. I was given the Keppra 3000mgs daily, and the Carbatrol was no longer there. Because I had alot of simple partial seizures and not any tonic clonic seizures, my dr felt as though keppra would hold me. If I did end up having tonic clonic seizures, they would have added another medication to the keppra. I was put on Keppra XR in may 2011, two months after having the VEEG. Since then, the only time Ive had seizures is when Im stressed or due to lack of sleep.

Thanks guys! I'm now concerned I won't have even the slightest twitch in my sleep deprived eeg, but I'd take that over the jerking any day. It had gotten to a point where I couldn't sit on some chairs for fear of throwing them over with some of my more violent jerks.

It does make me think the old neuro did want to leave me that twitchy for a definite result on the eeg, but I don't think I, or my family really could have coped with that. They've been so worried. :(

hang in there. I know its easier said than done. The last time I had a sleep deprived EEG, I was up all night and was so tired the next morning when my EEG was scheduled. They did see epileptic activity on it, even though I did take my morning dose of medication. So just the lack of sleep for me caused seizure activity. I wouldnt worry about it. Have you already taken the EEG or do you have yet to take it?

It's in a week... At 1 o'clock in the afternoon! I also have stuff to do in the morning before I go to the eeg so I will be thoroughly and completely exhausted. I'm hoping that will be enough to bring the twitching back. An answer would be fantastic but seizure control is fantastic too.

my keppra worked right away since i took it i had nothing ... just lots of side effects but im scared to come off it
