On Tuesday evening as I was going to get in my car to go buy milk, I hear the neighbor across the street yelling my name. Her and another lady I don't know came across to talk to me. They asked if I was missing a cat. I then realized that the smaller of my two cats never came back inside Monday night.
So this lady, that I don't know, hit my cat Monday night around 10 or 11 o'clock.
She then called a vet that she knows that lives by my house. Long story short..my cat was bleeding a lot and out of his mouth. The vet gets it all out and keeps him alive. She tells me that he was going to be calling her that evening to come get him and she was going to bring him back to my house.
Fast forward to today. I haven't heard from this lady as she never asked for my number and I forgot to ask for hers. I found the vet's phone number and left a message for him explaining I'm the cat's owner and I wanted to know what is going on with him. The vet then calls her and gives her my number. She calls me to tell me that the vet still has my cat and that she stopped at my house yesterday, but no one was home. She sets it up for me to go talk to the vet this evening since my cat also had some damage to one of his legs.
I go meet with the vet to see my cat and find out what all was wrong with him. He had a lot of blood in his lungs that got taken out, liver damage, cracked teeth, a laceration to one leg, and possible brain damage-his tongue now sticks out of his mouth all the time and it took him a few days to come around. The ligament that holds his leg in the socket was torn so the only way to keep the leg in the socket would be for someone to do surgery to repair the ligament. The other options are to let him walk around with a dropped leg that will drag or have the leg amputated which would be the best scenario.
My son asks to pet the cat because he's been upset about the whole thing. As soon as he starts petting him, the cat starts purring and rubbing his head against him. Now I'm stuck not knowing what to do. The vet says he should be able to come home on Saturday. I know vets always want the money up front which I do not have. Nor do I have a credit card to put it on. Everyone is telling me that the lady who hit him should be responsible to pay since she never asked me if it was OK to take him to the vet. I somewhat agree, but how do I ask a complete stranger to pay what will be a considerable bill with all that's been done?
My mom and dad both say that it's not worth it and to have the cat put down. I'm not sure I can do this either as my son would be highly upset, as would I. Plus, I don't see how it's fair to my cat as he never asked to be taken to the vet but was, and now has a second chance.
Sorry this was so long, but I just don't know what to do.
