I'm sure most of you check the expiration date on your milk before you buy it but did you know that everything has an expiration date?

All the items in the refrigerated section - cheese, lunch meat, pudding, jellow, butter, cottage cheese

Canned goods - soups, vegetables, gravy, dips, pasta sauce

Items on the shelf - potato chips, pretzles, bread, buns, candy, pasta, things that you 'just add water to' to cook, salad dressing, mayo, mustard, pickles, coffee, drink mix

Frozen foods - vegtables, pizzas, frozen dinners (even the ones that aren't frozen too)

Personal care products - soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, body loation, makeup, tooth paste, mouth wash
By using some of these old products might cause a rash

Baby products - diapers, wipes, formula, condoms (don't know if that's considered a baby product but if it's an old one you might end up with a baby)

Medicine - ones pescribed from the dr, vitimans, cold meds, asprin
Taking old meds can make you sick

House hold cleaning products - dish soap, furniture cleaner, bathroom cleaners, laundry detergent, fabric softeners

Things for your pets - wet food, dry food, treats, litter, items used to get rid of fleas

I didn't realize that most of these had expration dates until I was talking with my dad about it one time. I started checking things after that. I recently was going to buy some mayo. When I looked a the expiration date I saw it was a month past the expiration date sitting there on the shelf! I know with some things it's ok to eat if it's a little bit past the expiration date but the store isn't aloud to sell it.

Yea, even bottled water has expiration dates...crazy!

Fresh stuff like meats, milk, cheese, if it looks ok, smells ok then I still use it. On the flip side I've had fresh stuff go bad before their date.

I've been told that canned goods use Sell By dates. I'm a little more lax when using expired canned goods, but won't knowingly use something that's 6+ months out.

Last time I cleaned my pantry I found a can marked 2006, yikes!!!!!

I gave myself food poisoning eating egg noodles for a stir fry a few years ago. I saw that they were a far bit out off date, but thought they're noodles it'll be fine..... It was not fine.
I woke up thinking I'd had a seizure because the room was spinning and it wouldn't stop, couldn't even hold down a mouth full of water, I spent the next 12 hours with my head down a toilet sobbing like a 3 year old.
Definitely check those dates people, food poisoning is not pleasant.

This reminds me, was talking to my friend online the other night and she'd found a can of peaches in her cupboard that expired in march 1999!

Her father in law ate them because he was determined not to let them go to waste. That can not be good!

With stuff like fresh meat and dairy and eggs i will eat them a day or two past the sell by date if they still seem fresh, i'm pretty good at sniffing them out, and with eggs - if they float in water they're bad!

When i was living over in Ireland we used to get fresh stuff a lot so it didn't come with an expiry date so you learn pretty quick to tell if something is off. Same with my birds seed/treats etc.

I'm surprised at the cleaning products though!

hydrogen peroxide has an expiration date!! How can that be?

Interesting question - found this reason (link)
Hydrogen Peroxide can expire. H2O2 is a fairly unstable compound and will convert to water and gasses. There is also the possibility that as it ages and turns to mostly water it will begin to harbor bacteria ...

The bottom line is that if you're using it to clean a wound after the expiration date it probably isn't all that effective and could potentially make matters worse.

My grandma and I were cleaning out her cubbords a few years ago and found a can of soup from 1976! Now that's old!

In 2000 when I cleaned out closet for aunt where she stored the food I found a box of veral unopened from 1996 and other from 94 its just along with what you said proves people domt clean out cabinets often enough. I had to look at dates sevral times cuz it was freaky

I went to the local store the other day, and a couple of girls were demanding a discount on the 12 pack of beer they were getting. They said that every time they came in, the beer was past the expiration date, and tasted horrible. (They kept buying it even though they thought this??) Anyway, I was laughing inward to myself as the clerk had to explain that beer does not come with an expiration date. They put a 'Born On' date on the box, so you know how fresh it is. It probably tasted bad because it was Bud Lite. LOL. Anyway, I know must of us aren't buying beer (I think I was there for bread), but I thought that was an amusing story and fit the tread a bit.
