My partner has recently suffered 16 seizures in 24 hours followed by 5 seizures the following
Day. He was diagnosed with epilepsy 2 years ago at the age off 22 and the doctors haven't seemed to get him on the contact AEDs despite a mixture of clobazam, epilum, carbamzapine, kepra ( excuse spellings). He has weekly seizures on a regular basis and they have no idea why.

Getting back to the main issue,; after his horrific 21 seizures over 3 days his speech is very slow, keeps getting blurred vision and saying his front teeth are loose. It's almost as if he has had a stroke of some effect. I know this is an unusual case but just wondering if anyone has had anything similar?

This is a very difficulty time for me and his family so any positive news would be lovely!

Thank you in advance :D

I had 8 in one day back to back it took me a good while after getting out of the hospital to get back to "normal"

Hi elise64,

I'm so sorry your partner has had to go through that. That's a ton of seizures, very hard on the system, so it's not unusual for the brain and body to take awhile to get back on track. After one bad seizure it took me a month to feel "normal" again.

Make sure he's eating and drinking properly; dehydration can make recovery slow. Is he still on all those meds? It's possible that he was given extra medication while in the hospital to stop the seizures, so that could also be messing with him and slowing him down. If his vision and speech problems don't start to get better, or get worse, let the doctors know ASAP.

I hope they can get his seizures under control. Is he a candidate for surgery?

Best,
Nakamova

It is awful to have that many in that short of time but it took my a couple weeks when I had 5 in one week. Meds could cause that too. I hope he getts better soon.

Thanks for your posts. He is still in hospital at the moment and has been ok for 48 hours now. He is on loads of medication, 1500mg eplim, 800mg kepra, 20mg clobazam and 500mg carbamzapine twice a day. He is like a walking zombie but manages to work 21 hours and keep going despite all this. We are trying to get them to reduce it as I think it's too much.

They have mentioned surgery but I am very sceptical as it can cause more problem. Has any out there had surgery and had results?

Thanks for all your feedback, appreciate it :)

Hi Elise,
Sorry about the rough time your partner is having at the moment.

I have left temporal lobe epilepsy (caused by scarring on front left temporal lobe). I had surgery in March 2011, I was lucky to have a good recovery & so far I've been seizure free since the surgery.

Here is a link to a thread I started which I use to update on my recovery.

Thanks CQ, great to read your story. I'm glad it has worked for you. How long did you have epilepsy before surgery became the only option for you?

I had my 1st seizure at 9 months & took grandmal seizures until I was 3, I think I was still on meds until I was about 7. I went 21 years seizure free until I started taking seizures again in 2002 when I was 24. After I stated taking seizures again I mainly took simple partials (auras) & complex seizures.
My neurologist tried me on 5 different Anti Epilepsy Meds - Tegretol, Lamictal, Topamax, Keppra, Neurontin. Snce 2004 I have been on at less 2 meds at a time but none of the meds helped control the partials.

I went to see my neurologist at the end of 2009 after having approx 10 partials over a 2 month period. At that time my neurologist put me on Neurontin (which was an add on to the Tegretol & Keppra) & said there wasn't much more he could do so suggested I look into having the surgery & referred me to an epitiologist.
I wasn't able to get into see the epitiologist until mid 2010 but once we got the ball rolling & I started the pre surgery testing it all went pretty fast.

hi

hello ,
I am really sorry about that cluster . What type of seizures does he have ? It is really hard to figure out . I know if I have a seizure during the night , which I am not aware of I am worn out the next day . My ma could tell by jut talking on the phone with me . I either slur or talk very slow . I lay on the couch most of the day . I have complex partial . I have had seizures for the past 40 years . The 1st med u said I have never heard of . Other than that I have swithed all the meds you can possibly think of . I still am not under control and am on 5 meds going off one . One thing that I have found in me is that the side effects get worse as I get older . Also u have to undeerstand that I may have been on the same med. 3 different times in my seizure life . If I could be of any other help , please write back angood luck .
