I have been on my computer a lot. I was wondering if it was causing my increase in seizures?

Lately, I have had an increase in seizures. I started having nocturnal seizures. I hit my head against the bedboard, taking a nap. Then, the next day, I had seizures again in my sleep.

I saw the doctor and found out that I have blood in my urine. I have pink coming out of my eye. She does not know what it is. She is sending it out to a pathologist. I also had a CTscan last night. Might as well get it over in one day. The CTscan turned out normal

My neurologist upped my Keppra to 7 a day,3500. That is too much. I will talk to him about it when I see him.

Aww Ruth :( Please get well soon. *hugs*

Looks as if you doctor is on the ball re: the CT scan but 3500mg of Keppra is a slightly high dose (recommended amount is 3000mg?).

Plenty of rest is in order young lady... switch of the PC for now and relax.

If you spend all day indoors, it could contribute to a vitamin D deficiency. You should get at least 15 minutes/day exposure to sunlight (or something like that).

It's also possible that spending so much time on the computer could be stressful depending upon what you are doing on the computer. It's good to walk away from the computer and get some moderate exercise from time to time. :twocents:

I agree about the high dose. It is too much. I was having problems with 2000 mg. He raised it that high. From 2000 to 3500. That is an awful lot. What if one of my medicines is causing the increase in seizures?

Bernard, I will do that. I have been staying inside a lot. I have been very depressed. I do take Calcium with Vitamin D. I will go for short walks and see if that helps.

Wow, Ruth, that is a lot of Keppra!
You've also mentioned diabetes in other postings, so is that under control, also? Have you had your A1c tested lately?

Looking at a computer/video monitor for a long time can potentially disrupt your sleep, so that may be a factor.

Out of

curiosity, do you have a glare screen on your monitor to help with any photosensitivity, Ruth? If not, you may want to seriously consider one......

I agree 100% with everyone. Also, if I'm on my computer too much without breaks it's not good and if I'm on my laptop forget it (something different with my laptop :ponder: maybe lighting)

Benard is right about the Vit. D and my doc (primary) yelled at me for being so low with it along with every other vitamin and said "this could be why your seizures came back". I don't know where you are but here in NY we had a really bad summer (lot of rain) and he said the majority of people are lacking Vit. D and because of my deficiency as well as E he has me on 7000 IUs, but I opted to take 5000 since that seemed just too high. I have nocturnal seizures.

Good luck and feel well.

I have had my AIc tested less than a month ago. It is normal. When I was in the ER last night, the nurse tested my blood qlucose. It was 101. So it is not my diabetes.

I have a glare-free screen on my computer. I stayed off of the computer a lot less today.

RUTH-
I am taking Keppra XR 3000mg, Lamictal 25mg (just started) and Tegretol XR 600mg (getting off in a month).
Having any medication too high can cause seizures- it has to be right in the middle. I remember my neurologist gave me 700mg Tegretol XR and boy, I had more seizures cause of it. I told her I didnt like being on that many, so we reduced it down.
If you feel you're on too much- let the neuro know and maybe you can switch out meds for something else that may give you less side-effect.

Take care,
Crystal

Hi Crystal, I have talked to my neurologist and he increased my Keppra, temporalily. He has his hands tied behind his back. He is only under control of my mysoline and Keppra. He wants to lessen my medicines.

My primary doctory has control over all of my health. She tells my neurologist what to do. He has no choice. He does want to cut back my medicines.

I know it sounds crazy, but that is the way my insurance company works. He does tests and my primary doctor is suppose to give me the results. My neurologist assumed I knew something was wrong. When I asked him what is was, he said to ask my primary doctor.

Where I live, primary doctors that are good are hard to find. I live in a small town. There is really nothing I can do. We cannot afford to move.

Hi KelvarQ, My primary doctor told me that I am low in Calcium. I told her that I am taking Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D. She told me to take 2 of them. She told me that my Vitamin D is all right.

I am also staying away from the computer more. I am feeling better.

Hi Ruth,

Computer screens (specifically laptops,) absolutely used to cause seizures for me. In fact, at least 85% of my grand mals have taken place in front of one. Sometimes I would get auras in front of them, feeling the seizure come on, and if I moved away from my computer, it would stop.

I don't have issues anymore, but I think that might have something to do with the way some newer computers are. I'm a Mac girl, both at home and work, and where my old Powerbook used to give me trouble with my head, my Macbook does not. Even if I start feeling auras come on, these computers won't exacerbate anything, which is great because I'm a computer junkie!

I definitely have issues with photosensitivity- the lights in CVS and grocery stores can set me off too. Normal strobe lights, however, do not. Funny, I wish someone would just provide me with a list of everything my brain disliked ;)

Hi appsandsuch,

I use a laptop. It has a glare screen on it. That keeps any bright lights from my computer bothering me. I have one that is only 1 year old.

I have problems with photosensitivity too. My husband put real bright lights in the computer room. Those lights bother me. I would like a list as well. It would make it easier.

I have a laptop, I really don't get seizures at the computer, but if on youtube, I see a seizure warning, I do avoid it cause I watched one Anime video, I got a headache, just a push and pull feeling.

Billy. :twocents:

Edit: yes lights in stores (Fleurescent do bother me) a twitchy feeling, the new energy saving curly like lights bother me too.

Hi Ruth,

I have seizures in front of my computer at times also, usually moreso if I've been on it too long, but at other times too when i've not been on it for long at all. Flourescent lights are a big problem and just like Billyboyboo, those new energy saver lights also.
Hope you got some answers to the blood in urine and the 'pink' coming from your eyes. That must be of some concern to you I would imagine.

take care Ruth,
Roo
