Let's see how dated we are. Do you remember this line from Lost in Space tv program from decades ago?

I think of this phrase as I work at trying to feed my backyard birds. I have been trying to work out a peace agreement between the birds and the squirrels. I had gotten down to feeding only safflower and thistle, both of which the squirrels dislike. Then as we moved into the late fall, I had some black oil sunflower seed that I wanted to use up. Put that out, and of course, that sparked the squirrels again. But I also found some new birds visiting because of the sunflower seed. So I bought more sunflower seed along with the "Squirrel Feed" in hopes of luring the squirrels from the sunflower. I have one extremely persistent squirrel who hangs on the sunflower feeder upside down and eats to his hearts content.

So today, I bought an anti-squirrel feeder and some suet cakes for the suet feeder. It's so funny. Everytime a new feeder comes out, or something changes, the birds are so cautious! Given that and the dominance of certain ones within each species, it is an education. So they scatter, frantically saying "Danger, danger, Will Robinson!!!" until they calm down and find out the new thing in their feeding space won't eat them.

I've always had dogs, so this is my first dog-less winter and my first time feeding birds in the winter. It's an experience that I wouldn't trade except to have my sweet schnauzer girl with me again.

The birds in my backyard are way too cocky. when the feeder empties they scold us and then knock the feeder to the ground.

Not only do I remember that line.. I think I can visualize the episode lol*

Birds in winter are a treat. At times they brighten the darkest day. We have large dogs and they know better than to chase the birds BUT it is open season on squirrels. Squirrels really smart and learn fast. They now only run the tops of my fence.
memory lane... Do you remember those really dangerous, really stupid toy... klick klacks?? two heavy balls on a short rope. You had to get them going fast so they clicked clacked? ughhh I had alotta black and blue wrists from them lol

Enjoy the night

I use that phrase all the time. I have to explain it occassionally to my boys. I actually have the first season of Lost in Space on our video rental mail queue. We watched Forbidden Planet recently (the movie which spawned the TV series) and my youngest actually stayed awake and interested through the whole movie.

Skillifer,
I read somewhere you're not supposed to let those feeders go empty. No wonder the birds get ticked off with you.

Joan,
I have had terriers for the past 25 years. First one was a wire fox; she'd chase anything if you let her. She hated squirrels. Our schnauzer never chased birds, but she'd take out after a squirrel every chance she had. Neither of them ever caught anything.
I remember the Klick Klacks but never owned one. My cousin did though.

Bernard,
I'll have to look up that movie, Forbidden Planet. I don't recall ever seeing it. I think it's great that kids learn where some of our "old people talk."

Dr. Zachary Smith

Did you know that Bill Mumy (Will Robinson) was in Babylon 5?
The dude that played Dr. Smith did a Saturday morning kids show.
June Lockart went on to star in the movie.
Don't know what happened to the rest.

I miss seeing barn swallows. They could make a nest anywhere. Right now, all I have are grackles. They are worse than pigeons.
I also have some brazen squirrels. They are my co-workers.:roflmao:

I was a big fan of Lost In Space, and sometimes
I hum the theme song tune! *blush*

I'm not quite old enough to clearly remember the show, but I do remember an aluminum robot waving it's arms everywhere, and of course, the classic catch-phrase.

Mr. B,
My mom used that line when parenting too! (still does on occasion) ;)
I can remember her baking cookies or something, and if I tried to sneak too many, she would playfully pop my hand and go "Danger Will Robinson."

Molly,
I went to college in a very rural area; the squirrels outnumbered the students by at least two to one. Seriously. And it was like they all had rabies (we're talking aggressive squirrels). :agree: The stupid things wouldn't move out of the way of a person or a car.

One jumped out of a trashcan at me (I can't even describe the scream I let out) :paperbag: Another one was on a tree branch that bent down and caused a squirrel to swing about six inches in front of my face. The animal made a leap forward, and I made a leap back! ;)

Enjoy your birds this season, and best of luck with the squirrels. :)

Youse guys!!

Seriously. I am giving up on having any black oil sunflower seed at all. I bought that feeder yesterday that was a cage that was supposed to seal off the ports when a squirrel's weight was on it. Well, it doesn't work; my dastardly squirrel(only one out of five)has foiled me again. Hubby and I decided the tension on it is too tight. I am not modifying it; it goes back this afternoon.

I have no pigeons, but I do have grackles. They are nosy, noisy, quarrelsome birds as are the starlings we have in summer.

Black oil sunflower seed is much less expensive, by about half, than the safflower and thistle that I feed. Oh bother, as Winnie-the-Pooh was fond of saying in frustrating situations.

I am old enough ... but we didn't get ABC when I was a youngster. I think that was an ABC show. Saw it a few times at other peoples homes.

Yes youngsters, I lived in BC (before cable). Our antenna only picked up CBS and NBC until I was about 10. Then we picked up ABC, PBS, and some local broadcasting. I didn't get cable until I was married, about the same time I got E - Hmmmm..........
