I increased my son's depakote sprinkels from 4 per day to 5 per day (2-1-2). Since then he has been biting his nails. He is 11 and has autism. Not sure why he is doing this.

Is this a typical side effect of AEDs? I remember my uncle (had E) used to constantly bite his nails. He was on a different med, though.

I haven't heard of this personally, however, nobody is really sure how these drugs work exactly. I would ask his neurologist before increasing any dosages.

Best wishes

I used to bite my nails as an infant until my mid 20's.

I still do occasionally if a nail is too long & I'm stressed or can't find my manicure set. I never thought of it being related to my seizures though.

He chewed on his nails in the past when he was on a drug (not E related) and it went away when we removed the drug. He did not start biting his nails until the amount was increased from 4 caps per day to 5 per day...the neuro wants him to take 2 capsules 3 times a day (for a total of 6 per day)...I just haven't given him 6 a day yet.

I know AEDs can deplete certain vitamins/minerals. He is getting a multivitamin and mineral plus some other supplements. I guess I will call his doc to see if she has any ideas.

Thanks!:)

I've been on Depakote for quite awhile and I am a notorious nail-picker and biter. My wife goes insane with my obsession. I feel powerless to stop this sometimes and I have had to sit on my hands when it is really nagging at me. Not sure if this is Depakote or a feature of epilepsy or just a habit.
