When I say "ravaged by drugs", I'm talking about heroin etc in this instance.

Cint,
What I meant was that the current discussion is/was wandering away from the topic of epilepsy. I understand that people suffering from epilepsy are more at risk when it comes to depression. My son’s nocturnal epilepsy has had a terrible effect on his mood, social interactions and even cognitive abilities. Being sleep-deprived and having "thunderstorms" during sleep, while the brain’s trying to organize its daily memories isn’t a very good thing. If my son’s epilepsy proves to be intractable and resistant to medication, or if it worsens, he may suffer from severe depression someday. And there are cases of depression in the family, including myself, so it makes it even more probable.

My thyroid problems might be related to the lithium I take to control my depression. Although my TSH was alreay a bit high before the beginning of treatment. I’ll have a blood test in a week or so, we’ll see.

ps: 5-HTP has LOTS of possible interactions with prescription drugs because it may have an effect on some neurotransmitters. Please read the labels and documentation before using.

I have been put on about all meds. for depression, They either caused seizures or such bad side effects.

Last year I was told to take 5 to 6 fish oil, and prime rose oil.

I took 6 fish oils and 6 prime rose oil. The only side effect was that made go to the bathroom, which was good for me since I'm seem to always have to other problem.

I now have Prozac compounded.

I took Abilify (a psychotropic med prescribed primarily for psychosis/schizophrenia/schizoaffective/or adjuvant therapy for depression); it didn't work for me. I also took haloperidol a couple of years; now, that was living Hell.

I hear that medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are great for the brain: capric oil, coconut oil, etc. Try this site: atkinsforseizures.com. You can try Omegas-3,6,9; however, MCTs have great advantages for epilepsy because they are more ketogenic.

There is some link between ketogenic diet and the original medicine used to treat epilepsy called paraldehyde (my observation). Ketones and aldehydes help the E-brain function better. I do a lot of organic chemistry research on the ketogenic diet. I used to teach it at the college-level. I'll post more of my findings tomorrow. I enjoy doing E-related research and advocacy. I've become quite passionate about it, since diagnosis.

Best, Chels.

jyearta,
tell me more about your experience with the fish oil, 5-6,000 mg of it?
I'm a firm believer in it for general health and inflammation. I myself take 3,000 mg and my son with E takes 2,000 mg.
At the levels you took,
Tell me how it helped you, if it did.
Who suggest the fish oil?

When you say "all meds" are you saying you tried the alternative items too, like Inositol, Resveratrol, SAMe, 5HTP, etc?

thanks

It was my OB/GYN in 2010, When I went for yearly check-up I was a mess. I couldn't stop crying, I was using a walking cane. She couldn't believe it was me.

She asked who my Neur. was , she wrote drown the name & no. of a Neru. she recommended. She told to go when I left her office to a drug store and get the fish oil and Primerose oil.
I started taking 6 to 8 fish oil and prime rose oil daily. These did make me go to the bathroom but they helped my depression so much.
On the prime rose oil I can. only take 500mg.

After going to the Neur. that she gave to name of I am now taking a compounded for of Prozac. along with F.oil and PR oil.

PLEASE remember we all react diff. to diff meds.

I hope this helps you in someway.

thank you jyearta,

from what I understand the oils helped you a lot with your depression, correct?

I'm sure they also helped you with any pains you may have had.
Yes, you are correct everyone responds differently.
But from my research these oils help many people that is why we take them in my household. However not to the level you take.
I'm glad you found this help. Too bad more allopathic docs don't know about these valuable oils.

When my Son started E meds depression hit quick, and it was the meds...

Our happy dude called to say I am not feeling myself at all (freak out).....High quality Omega 3 introduced rapid (after research), combined with E...I don’t know, but other than a recent dark period and was very short and maybe just life, we seen no depression since...still taking both.

Chaz1,

may i ask how much Omega 3?
You say "combined with E" are you referring to vitamin E or short for Epilepsy?
As I see you are saying still taking both, perhaps you mean AED and O 3.
Sorry, It's not clear to me.

1500mg Omega, 400IU Vitamin E, to start...Now on 1000mg Omega, 200IU Vitamin E daily, and more supplements.

B vitamins are considered the happy vitamins, and maybe best taken B complex...do some research :)

Yes still on med...Low a dose as possible and he seriously will do all in power not to go higher (not enough but learning, and needs time to adjust to all this and some)

Correct, sorry I didn't make that clear.

I think the reason most dr, don.'t bring up the oils and how they can help is because they don't get a kick back like they do from drug companies.
