I'm returning to the forum after stopping for about a year. My 27 year old son whom my husband and I have medical custody of is having a horrible time. Some doctors say he has an epileptic pychosis due to the epilepsy and the medication. Of course the epilepsy isn't going away and the medication is necessary. He gets pretty intense before a seizure. His aura now is lots of shouts and fist pounding right before it happens. We were thinking years back that this was a different problem so he was given Ativan for 2 years. 2 months ago we got off that after a long hard road. (Could use advise about that because I heard you can have side effects for a long time).
He is having all types of seizures right now. He is a big guy and he has drop attacks. Very scary because sometimes we can make sure he doesn't hurt himself and sometimes we can't. He is on Dilantin, Depakote, Celontin, Keppra and Vimpat. Obviously, nothing is helping him as much as we would like it to. And oh yes, being a big fellow - several doctors give him large doses of medication. He is very sensitive to medication. The only doctor that knows this and helps us is his main neurologist who is semi-retired. All other doctors think she is on the wrong track giving such a small amount of medication but when he has higher levels we have lots of problems. We have literally seen him go from seizing, to being as nice and can be, to being pretty violent all in about an hour while Dilantin was being given (about 400mg) in a drip IV in ER. And, the other point is my wonderful son is losing his personality every day. He is going farther and farther away. Like any other young man he not to happy having his parents tail him around the house while trying to protect him from falls. So he gets angry. All of our lives are in a tail spin. Any help?
