Hi guys

I need some driving advice. I had my first seizure in October 2010 and immediately sold my car and haven't driven since. However, because I didn't want to lose my licence card (it's handy for i.d), I didn't inform the DVLA or send off the licence.

Now I'm thinking that when (hopefully) it is time for me to start driving again, the DVLA will need to be informed, but is the fact I didn't send off my licence all them years ago now going to affect that?

If you did not inform the DVLA that you could not drive there should be no problem as you only sold the car.
 
I am not an Attorney so this isn't legal advice, just an opion and recommendation. I can only recomend that you goto your State's website and do some research regarding Epilepsy and driving. Ensure you are following the law before registering a new (for you, replacing the one you sold) vehicle. There could be serious consequences for you should you get into an accident, and it is discovered that you didn't do everyrhing you should have. Criminal charges, lawsuits and insurance issues (like refusal to cover accident) are things to keep in mind. If unsure, I recomend that you seek the advice of an Attorney. It is your choice, just do it right!

I notice you are from the UK so your regulations and laws will be much different from those in the US and Canada. There are a few people here also from the UK, and I hope they see your post and respond.

If I were in your position, I would phone your DVLA and simply ask, without giving details about your personal situation, what the rules are if someone is diagnosed with seizures. At least you will know what you are dealing with.

In some places it is up to the doctor to inform the motor vehicle dept. that a particular patient has been medically forbidden to drive, and the motor vehicle dept. handles it from there (you then have to contact the dept. yourself or have them chase you down lol). You make it sound like you voluntarily chose not to drive, and that it was not an official/legal requirement from your Dr. to not drive . . . is this true? If so, it sounds to me like you were never in a position to have to turn in your driver's license.
 
i'm from the uk, and after i was diagnosed my neurologist told me i needed to surrender my licence for safety reasons. its just so that when you can drive again, the dvla know about your condition if you happen to have a seizure while you are driving
