i'm a doctor ( gp) , 24 years
epilepsy disease started one and half year ago
until now i had 3 attack of grand male

i want to ask 2 question

1) is it common to have epilepsy in this age? and what will be it's progression?

2) i'll choose specialty in medicine after 2 months . so, is it better to avoid surgery field? is it better to avoid stressful field as surgery or anesthesia ?
so the only chooses will be only internal medicine! :/

NB i don't take medication even i know it's benefit ,, just because i'm frightened of its side effects ...

Hi meeero,

I'm new here too. I have a very stressful job and just came off Neurotin and I am very scared of the long term effects of all the E medications. I need to be able to keep my head about me and quick discussion making. Neurotin caused my seizures after taking it for 10 yrs for other medical issues and now it has been going on 2yrs and I am scared I may have caused my mess. Dr. don't know what do. I refuse to take anymore medication. How do you feel about Bio feedback?

Hi LW

thanks for your replay

neurontin (gabapentin) is a drug used to control Epilepsy ,, and peripheral neuropathy

many diabetic patients use it for their peripheral neuropathy ( numbness and tingling in hands and feet)
and they are using it for years and when they miss doses they don't have attack of epilepsy

i guess u may have epilepsy and it was controlled in neurontin

so u need to do EEG and visit neurologist to prescribe a medication ,should be used for 2 years then gradual reduction take place

Hi meeero, welcome!

Epilepsy can show up at any age. It's really not just one disorder, but many different kinds (over 40) that affect each individually differently. In the same way, each person is affected by medication differently. I understand how the side effects can seem off-putting. You need to balance the possibility of side effects against the risk of having your seizures progress. If your brain gets in the habit of seizing, it makes future seizures even more likely.

In my case, I am bothered by side effects, but they are tolerable. My seizures are controlled, and I don't feel limited in what I can do. (I am too old to enter medical school and become a surgeon, but if that were my dream there would be no restrictions :)) If you feel that stress is a seizure trigger for you, then a less stressful field of medicine may make sense. Do you know what may have triggered your seizures? Were you unusually fatigued at the time?

Nakamova

thanks for your replay

i really don't know what is the main trigger of epileptic fit

i think the most period of stress was during exams ,, but i didn't have fit on it
so, i don't sure if stress will give attack or not

i asked until now 2 neurologist and they told be " it's better to avoid stressful field"

Did the

2 neurologists give any reasons for their statement of "it's better to avoid a stressful field?"

While it's true that stress is a major trigger for E patients like us, there are many other things: lack of sleep, foods, photosensitivity, allergies.....the list goes on. Even vitamins and minerals are tied into it in some cases.

Keeping a journal of how you feel every day, and noting any changes would be of great benefit. If you happen to note anything prior to having a seizure, then perhaps you can find a pattern that is a cause....and find a trigger?

As Nak pointed out, there are more than 40 different types of seizures--and trying to find a way to control them isn't easy. Biofeedback is one way to do it.

I'm including a link to one thread specifically about biofeedback, although there are quite a few--you can find them by using the "search" option above.

Feel free to poke around in the forum, there are plenty of nooks and crannies with all sorts of things to read. You'll enjoy yourself here, I'm sure.

Take care,

Meero,

You maybe right! I come here with an open mind and my 20 year journey of trying to figuire out what is causing my medical issues that started back in 1990 with numbness in my toe. I have had all the test for everything under the sun but the only thing that makes sinse is Epilepsy but it did not show up until my Neurotin went toxic? I hope you don't give up your dreams or let anything hold you back from doing anything you what to do or be!!!

Lot's of Love,

LW

yes i hope too

but i have to exclude surgery for that cause

i hope to find the suitable field which i like and suitable for me
