Hi - I hope this post is allowed

My husband and I are wanting to try for a child towards the end of this year - last night an article was posted on the bbc about sodium voltorate - which is what he takes at the moment for his epilepsy.

All of last night and this morning I have been reading of the risks of this and pregnancy and I’m worried that’ll lead to him not wanting to/ being afraid to try for a child.

Has anyone else had a similar experience and do you maybe have any advice on how we could approach this - I know there is different medications and speaking to a doctor would be the best first step - but just looking for some guidance on anyone who’s had the same challenge presented - thanks

Hello. In our case, I'm the one with epilepsy, & I've taken nearly every AED out there--I'm currently on Zonisamide (500mg/day) & Xcopri (250 mg/day). I was on AEDs during both of my pregnancies. I was on 340 mg Dilantin/day during the first, which was a surprise pregnancy--the birth control pills failed. my neurologists watched everything carefully & raised my folic acid dose during both pregnancies from 1mg/day to 4. During the second pregnancy, I was on Topamax/Topiramate because I'd started having complex partial seizures in addition to the simple partials. Both of my sons were healthy at birth and are healthy.

Hi Mich95,

I understand where you are coming from I was taking Depakene (Depakote) and my Dr. told me that if I was
to conceive that the child had a high risk of being deformed as well as having spinal problems do to the med.
Also epilepsy runs in my family but mine wasn't genetic but I was still told that there was a 50% chance that
the child would end up with epilepsy. So my husband and I looked into adoption and we wanted an older child
that didn't get the chance in life like an infant would but they turned us down because they said I couldn't drive.

In the long run I worked in public school so I worked with at least 200 students a day and my first students are
in their mid 50's now.

I wish you and your family only the best and May God Bless All of You,

Sue
