Hi,

My name is Bec. I have a 3.5 y/o daughter (Georgia) who is developmentally delayed (yep - pretty general). Basically the main issue is with communication. She doesn't really speak as a 'normal' 3.5 yo would. We have had early intervention since around 2. Paedatrician, speech therapist, early childhood intervention services, she attends early ed at Verney Rod School (Shepparton). We have attended the paedatrician at 2.5 years, 3 yr and 3.5 years - so every six months. He has classified her as a mixed profile. Doesn't show traits of riualisitic behaviours for autism etc... The confusing thing for him is that she has said many words, but often does not repeat them. Its like she loses words. She has strung a couple of words together only a few times. She had a sleep deprived EEG that came up all clear. Next on the list is an MRI and we have been referred to Dr Ingrid SCHEFFER at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne. Hopefully she/they accept us and see us soon!!!
The waiting is horrible, not knowing what is happening with your daughter is hard, espically when it seems everyone else is developing in leaps and bounds.
My 17 month old would nearly be ahead of my 3.5 year old.
Georgia has a good understanding of what we say to her though and what others say. So receptively, she seems fine. Toilet training is certaily difficult. We manage to commuicate, but sign language may have to play a bigger role - soon.

I really just wanted to say hello, put it out there about Georgia and see if anyone else has a young child with - epilepsy aphasia - ???

Our paedatrician has mentioned this a few times, which is what we believe he believes it may be...and why he of couse is sending us to the Austin.....

Would love to hear from anyone is a similar situation.

Hi Bec, welcome to CWE!

I hope you are able to get some answers soon for your daughter. Is she currently being treated with any medications? Sometimes those can have cognitive side effects. If she isn't on meds, it could be that she is having neurological events that originate near parts of the brain that are involved in speech or in memory. The MRi may reveal if there is scarring, but often with epilepsy it comes up negative. It's likely that the pediatric neurologist may recommend additional EEGs -- sometimes it can take a few to register abnormal brainwaves, especially with children. If she has something along the lines of Landau-Kleffner syndrome (which can produce epilepsy-related aphasia), she may be having seizures at night, and an overnight EEG might be more revealing. You can read more about LKS here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landau–Kleffner_syndrome.

Keep us posted,
Best,
Nakamova

thankyou Nakamova. No, she isn't on any meds. It has been indicated to us that she may have to go through an EEG again but for a longer period of time. She had a sleep deprived EEG around 6 months ago, which was waking her up at 2am and keeping her awake, tiring her out and having the EEG so that she would sleep through it. Lasted around 40 mins. That was negative. I have read up on Landau-Kleffner syndrome.
Naturally I want to know if she has this, what then? What can medically be done..... Its awful not knowing and being in the dark......
