I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me.

I have just starting taking my practical and written examinations for a FETAC 5 and ITEC course in Make-up Artistry. In the practical exams I have to be in the rooms with everyone else, that is not an issue, as in the year my classmates have seen me have a seizure and tutors and have been able to deal with the situation appropriately.

My problem is, the written exams. When I did my Junior Certificate, I was provided a separate room with a supervisor and a nurse just in case I had a seizure due to the stress of exams. In my Leaving Cert this wasn’t provided as my vice principal decided I didn’t need it despite my seizure threshold being very low throughout my exams and me having to be taken out of several exams before I had a tonic clonic seizure.

At the start of this course I addressed this situation with my course facilitator, who said it would be no problem to provide me with a room, supervisor and nurse, but the tutor who teaches ITEC seems to have gone over her head to the Principal of the college and told him I do not need it. Despite the fact that twice this year, in college ambulances have had to be called due to me sustaining injuries from a seizure.

I feel this is due to the fact that I have missed many classes (even though I’ve provided Doctor’s certs where applicable) for different Dr’s appointments, in Sligo, Galway and Dublin which are not just for my epilepsy. But I have also missed classes due to having a tonic clonic seizure in the morning, which is when I’m most susceptible to having them.

The reason I am concerned, is because in the examination rooms the desks are extremely close together. I am afraid of sustaining an injury. When I was in secondary school I lost my best friend who had a seizure in an exam hall and he hit his temple off of a corner of a desk, so it wasn’t the seizure that killed him, it was the injury he sustained. But also, I do not want to disrupt the exams of my other classmates, causing them to have to reschedule their exams and cause them stress. I’ve only had my second exam and at the beginning of my first exam I had two absence seizures.

What should I do? And is this illegal?

(I would also like to add said 'tutor' said to my fiancée over the phone that I 'picked and chose' what classes I attended, not knowing I only miss classes due to appointments and illness).

is there a school counselor you can review with?

you need some and deserve some understanding here.......

you made it all this way and they need to help pull you through exams, and you are not asking for much...what my son does is report all med changes and real challenges (he not there reporting often) so school takes additional challenges into consideration and by EU law is MUST

we find going in humble saying help is needed really works...Epilepsy is considered chronic, and exams are hard on the brain and you deserve space and understanding

applaud you doing it!

Sounds like this tutor has no clue about epilepsy or how it affects you. How dare they do this! You need to speak again with your course facilitator or the principal if necessary (or have someone else do it for you) and make sure they fully understand your concerns and why you sometimes miss classes. They should also be putting this tutor right about his attitude. Hope you get things sorted out x

I'm 26 and the eldest in my class. They are understanding of my epilepsy when they see me having a seizure. But not now.

I have turned around and asked for help, I even went to the Principal myself today to review the situation and I was given no answer as he could not find the tutor in question.

Unfortunately the college in question doesn't have a counsellor for the students.
I feel like I should report them or something.
I just don't want to screw up my exams and everyone elses due to a seizure.

... the tutor who teaches ITEC seems to have gone over her head to the Principal of the college and told him I do not need it. ...

What makes the tutor competent to make a medical decision in this regards? I'd suggest getting a note from your doctor (or nurse) explaining the medical basis for the request and petitioning the decision maker (whether the Principle or an underling) directly.

Fight it, this is illegal in Australia at least. Everyone is entitled to the opportunity to attempt to do their best at education and epilepsy is certainly no different. You don't need the additional stress of wondering if you'll be injured. Can they at least move your desk away from others and keep you close to the door?

Unfortunately the situation wasn't rectified. But thank you for all your help and concern.
I even contacted the Irish epilepsy charity and they got back to me once but never replied to my further inquiry.

Oh well.

But good news is I graduated and didn't have another further seizure activity.

In the U.S. in high school kids can have IEPs and 504 plans (my son has one now for major depression and suicidal thoughts :( Just diagnosed last week - it's been quite a week). This means the school must provide reasonable accommodations to maximize student success. I teach college and at least the IEP transfers to college so that some of my students take exams in separate rooms and have double or quadruple time, are allowed notes or open book, translators, whatever their plan allows. It seems there must be something like that for seizures. The students go through Student Services here in the U.S. Is there something like that? Can you start with your advisor? Sometimes course instructors get jaded because students will make up excuses, but you have doctors' notes. Being that stress is a trigger and you are concerned not only for your safety, which is critically important, but for the overall class in taking the exams, something should be available. This makes me very angry. If I were your professor I would schedule a separate time in a safe room to take the exam. What is wrong with people?

Oops, I see this was a week or so ago. I'm glad to see you graduated! Congratulations!!! :)

you graduated

YEAH!!! Yippee!!! Well done girl!! Congratulations!

Graduation + no seizure = fantastic news! Congrats. :)

congrats on the graduation ...
in future scenarios like this .. do what is best for YOU.
it may sound self-aborbed ...but hey ...dont go for public acceptance ... just do it for yourself.

d-mo

Well, you'll be pleased to know Irish Epilepsy (formally known as Brainwave) got back to me, and wanting to take my case and the college to the Equality Authority.

Should be quite interesting.
I'm not sure if I want to do it as I've graduated. But I WOULD want to approach the college with the head of the Charity to make sure more stringent policies are put in place for future students with illnesses.
Because they provided (I've only just heard) a separate room, for someone with diabetes, with a nurse and supervisor, so why not me.

I want to make sure that ALL students who have a chronic/non-chronic illness and need these measures put in place for their exams or any other time, have them there.
So we're having a meeting at the end of this month.

Bravo! Good for you for helping to make things fairer for other students.
