Hi

My 16 year old son has been diagnosed with Fetal Valproate Syndrome. He has the facial and other characteristics of the syndrome. He has Asperger’s, ID or developmental delays, and short term memory problems. He also had a hyperspadius and surgery on both of his eyes for lazy eye when he was young.

My youngest who is 12 years has moderate Autism, ID or developmental delays, Tourette Syndrome, OCD, and had problems with her right side coordination. Which has much improved through speech therapy which all our kids had.

We are currently trying to find information in there is a link to problems with the bladder or incontinence in older children due to problems in this area with my daughter.

This summer she started having problems with holding her urine, it just gushes. I'm not sure if it might be due to her muscles or not. We went to the doctor today and are going to ask to have an ultrasound done on her bladder.
My son also had a partial blockage associated with his bladder seen on a ultrasound.

Hi Diana, welcome, to CWE.

I'm sorry you and your daughter are struggling with this. It's tough to know for sure what might be responsible for your her recent-onset incontinence. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of data out there for long-term side effects related to fetal valproate syndrome. An ultrasound and/or an x-ray is probably your best bet for ruling in or out any genetic or structural issues. I hope you get some answers soon.

Best,
Nakamova
