It was a good game -- I think the US played much better than they did against Ghana, even if they let Portugal get a late goal in...

That second goal from Portugal was pure luck and should never have happened, Dempsey, Beasley and Beckerman all had a great game, The USA steeped it up a gear when needed and the saves Tim Howard made were fantastic. I agree with Nakamova they played better than they did against Ghana. Just proves how much they deserve to be there. One of the best games considering nobody gave the USA a chance.

that extra one minute was added because an injured player(I don't remember who it was) was rolling around in the field for too long.I know he couldn't help it, but hey I'm a frustrated fan lol It would have been just 4 more minutes if he would have gotten up a little sooner:(

I think Howard wasn't paying as much attention because USA were already in the mindset that " we won, it's only like 30 more seconds, what can Portugal do in 30 seconds?" and bam Portugal scores

But overall, they played much better than they did against Ghana as you guys have said. It was really hot yesterday there too, the guys were sweating like crazy. But I hope they can beat Germany.

I missed the match today between America and Germany so I watched it tonight, it was a good game and the USA were unlucky not to score a few times, Tim Howard did a good job for the USA. The USA have a hard game on there hands when they meet Belgium.

US looked so tired today lol We got to play against 2 of the best teams in the world in the group stage, so I hope that experience helps when we're playing Belgium :)

The US has until next Friday to rest up. And it will be the Fourth of July! That should pump them up.

Nakamova

Do not worry they will be well rested for a good game.

katzy

They played two of the best teams and were up for it so bring on Belgium.

Whoops! I just realized that they will be playing next Tuesday, not next Friday. Still, they should be in good shape for Belgium by then. Unless the team spends their downtime in Brazil partying...

Well the USA can hold there head up high tonight, I know they lost 2 - 1 to Belgium but what a game Tim Howard had and Jones how did he get up and keep going. I hope there is a big welcome home for the team they deserve it considering what each and everyone of them have gone through. Well done USA

I only got to watch half of the game because I had an evening class that was starting at 6:30. I'm disappointed but Howard I have to commend him:) our defense was really good,(aka just Howard and not the rest) just need to work on the rest lol

attaching a wikipedia edit that's really funny :D

I was looking for a thread like this.
Actually, I was looking for the thread that was started four years ago.

I think the US national team did well.
I think they need better conditioning, as it seems they drop off toward the end of the game, and the other team manages to score.

The other team I'm rooting for is The Netherlands.

It's hard looking for tv broadcasts of the game.
What channels are you watching, or are you watching online?

I don't like watching it on TV. I watch on Espn.go.com

The USA did a fantastic job :clap:, played out of there skin, got up without complaining and keep playing. They dropped off towards the end no doubt there but it was not for lack of trying or energy, just look at Jones and what he went through. Belgium scored and good goals but they had players with more experience and that can only come with time but you cannot instill the will, the want and the trying which was to be found in the USA team. But I agree with what you are saying.

I am a little bit bias though and cannot give enough credit to the USA team for the way they played.

Yes, the did a good job. The were in the "group of death" or something, the most difficult group.
They did do well, considering that most of the US professional players aren't on the same level as everybody else (including pay).
This probably explains the football plight in the US http://www.profootballhof.com/history/general/chronology/1869-1939.aspx

I think it takes more skill to play soccer than football; certainly more endurance, and less weight and personal protective equipment.
Probably fewer injuries occur. Yes, torn ligaments and concussions, etc. but I don't see more serious injuries with soccer.

That being said, whose in the quarter finals?

They changed the rules a lot because of career ending injuries, like the NFL. So like you said most is torn ligaments and concussion but I know 2 people who could not play any more because of injury, actually one played for Ireland, it was a shame he was very good.

France v Germany
Brazil v Colombia
Argentina v Belgium
Netherlands v Costa Rica

Sounds like Eire would have made the World Cup if he were healthy.
Germany over France
Brazil over Columbia
Argentina over Belgium (probably the other way around, but how often does Belgium make it this far?)
Netherlands over Costa Rica.

What are the rules for international football?
Everything I find doesn't get specific enough, which is why I am confused.
You said the rules have changed?
The way Mexico was jumping all over the Netherlands players and getting away with it.
The 'dives' by the Netherlands player?

Ireland should have been there, but for a french player ah well he got away with it C'est la vie. That annoyed me with the Mexico, the ref was totally against the USA, the amount of frees that the US should have got and there was a definite penalty. The diving has got out of hand but some players are known for it and are good at it, they even try getting other players sent off for it. All the referees should have the one rule book and if they move from that get rid of them, the best ref was an Italian called Pierluigi Collina he took no crap from anybody and they all knew it so you always had a good game when he was there. They should have him train the referees.

The rules are simple really, the basic rules are no hands, penalty's, Fouls, offside, misconduct, throw in's, goal kicks, corner kicks. These are the basic rules. You cannot tackle a person from behind this is one of the changes and when you do tackle your foot has to make contact with the ball other wise you can face a red or yellow card depending on how malicious it is.

My wife is from Brazil, so clearly we want them to win today. My wife wants France to beat Germany, and I don't really care about that one. I want Costa Rica to win just because they have done so well, and have definitely surprised everyone. Netherlands will probably win, but you never know. . .
As for the US team, they played almost a completely defensive game because they don't have a good enough midfield to make plays. It was sad to see almost the entire team on their end of the field so much of the time. It makes for a kind of boring game. In spite of all the players defending, it was still Howard who saved the day.
