I finally was able to go to my new neurologist today.
Its taken about a year to set one up- and its been a little over a year since I saw my last neurologist before I moved.
My primary doctor has been keeping my meds the same since I've moved which is good until I could go to my neurologist.
Today was the day- it took a while to be seen but I didn't mind waiting since I've waited so long anyway.
We talked about my seizure troubles and anything that is bothering me. I told the doctor that I believed the Tegretol XR was not working as well as it did before. He has changed me over to Lamictal which will take a long time to be on totally. I will be able to get off of Tegretol finally! I really didin't like how it was working and it makes me sleepy all the time. So now I'm on three meds until I can start reducing Tegretol down.
The doctor was asking me questions and we found out that my seizures are coming from the left side of my brain and they are might be better controlled with Keppra XR and Lamictal. Sometimes my eyes for to the right and my head follows and then I just stare into space and I don't respond. Very annoying. I complained of getting bad headaches after my longer seizures that are about three minutes. He said they were migraines and that there is medicine that I can look into, when I have my next appointment. I had a migraine all by itself for four days and I was so miserable that I almost went to the E.R. I could not sleep or get comfortable at all and it felt like my head was burning and nothing I did helped. I could not even brush my hair very well due to pain.
A post-seizure headache is bad and I took 6 Tylenol. I told the doctor this and he said that it only makes it worse! I won't be doing that again!
I admitted that I reduced my Tegretol XR by 200mg on my own, even though (I know now) that is was NOT a good idea. I have Atonic events now where I fall forward in under one second and I have no control over my arms. I fall forward just like someone coming behind me and pushing me. Several of my friends have had to catch me and it scares me a lot. I live upstairs in my apartment and have to rush downstairs so I don't get caught on the stairs and fall down.
We also found out that I am more sensitive on my right side than my left even though I am left handed. It was weird to me! I felt pain on my right and pressure on my left instead of it being the same..
After that, the doctor came in with another neurologist and 5 other students I'm guessing. Kinda surprised me.
It was nice to see a neurologist that specializes in Epilepsy. The Majority of the patients there were E patients.
I will have an MRI and EEG soon- I don't look forward to it at all but I know its important to do. I hope Lamictal and Keppra XR will work out better than Tegretol XR.

The dr. said that most likely my seizures started as a result of being born premature- I had seizures from age 6 to now 26. I died once as well, while I was in the hospital as a baby. It caused some damage.

Is there anyone else take Keppra XR and Lamictal?
If so, how is it working out for you?

Anyways- I hope all is well for everyone, take care
Crystal

Sounds like you've got a good neurologist! I hope he continues to work for you, and that the med changes are successful.

Thank you. I am nervous about trying another med. This will be my 4th med to try. I will be glad to get rid of Tegretol XR. I just have never really liked it and I worry while I'm on it. So a newer med along with Keppra that came out in 2000 sounds good to me. Not old meds like Tegretol XR lol.
This neurologist actually sat down and talked with me and explained things more- my other neurologist, who I also liked was sort of quick with me and she didn't explain things as much.

I am hoping things work out well.
I will probably never be totally seizure free since I've had seizures my whole life- but they might be in better control than they are now.

I am

sooooooo glad that you finally got to see the neurologist, Crystal. They sound like they really know what they're doing!! Now, just get the boring tests done, and go from there.....

I'll be thinking of you....

We recently changed neuro's --last spring -- it was the best decision!

Good luck with your new meds!

Sounds like you found a good doc. Congrats! :mrt:
