I've been having allergies and a secondary cold. Went to allergist and he put me on Afrin, Sudanese, and nasocort. I trusted him when he said I would not have any interactions. Should have known better. I'm allergic to everything (meds, food, basically anything in the air!) I've gotten lamictsl rash, almost died going toxic on keppra, have chronic hives(treated by injections) from zone grab.
It's just such a sad defeated feeling. I get a VNS on Jan 12th. I pray that it helps because I have aging parents and raise my 7 year old daughter on my own. I'm so sad and just want to cry:(

Hey Karen --

:hugs:

Sorry to hear about the t-c seizure. :)

Infections and/or physiological stress can lower seizure threshold. Some cold medications can as well. The nasal sprays are probably safe, but if the cold med has pseudoephedrine it might be the culprit. Hard to know for sure if you are extra-sensitive to meds.

I hope 2017 brings you better health.

It's def. the meds. I have almost died twice from two different AED's going toxic. I should have known better, but the allergist was so confident this wouldn't happen. Smdh.

Oh dear! I know exactly how to feel, no TC for 7 years and I had one Christmas night! It's depressing :( I thought I was winning over Epilepsy and now I feel totally defeated. Anything neurological is tricky, I've found GPs won't give me advice when it's not their area of expertise. The truth is doctors don't know everything about the brain and how it works. Maybe your allergist got it wrong, because it's not his field of expertise.
Hope the VNS works for you and hope you have better luck in 2017

Sorry you had a tonic clonic, hope you are feeling better soon.

Sometimes talking to the pharmacist about taking another med that can be prescribed by another dr or even an over the counter med that you want to take can be a good idea. I have a horrible cold right now and I asked the pharmacist about what med would be good to take for the problems I was having - horrible cough, runny nose and a few more. She got on the computer and looked up all the meds I was on and asked if I was taking anything over the counter. After a few minutes she found what would be good for me and so far it has worked and I haven't had any problems seizure wise. My cough has let up and I'm not wiping my nose every three minutes.

I got a VNS about 10 years ago and it has helped a ton! Before I got it I was having at least 20 seizures a month, mostly all very bad complex partials and a good many grand mals thrown in there. I had tried several different meds but none seemed to be helping much. I am still having seizures, not nearly as many though, maybe 5 a month. They are usually only simple and complex partials but they don't last as long and they aren't as bad as the ones I was having before I got the VNS. I do have a grand mal maybe 3 times a year which aren't as bad as the ones that I was having before either. I'm still taking meds but not as many and not as high of dosages.

It did take a little while, maybe the first year, to figure out what settings the VNS should be on and what meds and dosages to take along with it though. My neuro will change the settings on my VNS every so often depending on if I've had more or less seizures since the last time I saw him. He's also been able to reduce and even take me off of some of the meds that I'd been on when I first got it.

Thank you all for your encouraging words. They mean so much. I guess Ill just take it one day at a time like everyone else. That is all we really can do. Wishing good health in 2017 to everyone.

That IS about all you can do. My epileptologist has always told me, "ONE DAY AT A TIME".

You can only imagine how devastated I was when I had my first tonic-clonic 2 years AFTER having my temporal lobectomy!!

Hang in there!!
