Luckily for me, I don't like vaccinations....so I never get a flu shot. It always seems that when I used to get the flu shot, I'd end up getting the flu. :) So instead, I don't get the shot and I manage to stay healthy every flu season. :) But yes, vaccinations can cause autoimmune issues. The most likely viruses for my ear issue are being exposed to Measles, mumps, rubella, or Cytomegalovirus (which can give the person flu-like symptoms). Lucky me..... :)
 
There is discussion in other neuro communities about using methods to rid the body of latent viruses. If you are interested.

As a child I had severe problems with both of my ears. I couldn't hear hardly at all until in 1980's a doctor here had tried a new eperimerimenal surgery to cover holes in my ears . He took skin graphs from behind the ear s and put it on the inside of both ears and it was successful and I had no problems with my ears or infections! But, now I think I am losing some hearing due to my brain is not complete. But, to you congratulations!

LOL....okay, time for an update, since I saw the ear specialist yesterday. :)

He looked at the results of the bloodwork and said there was no sign of my hearing loss being autoimmune related. Also, the only thing wrong with my blood is that my red blood cells are too big. This could be due to seizure meds, B-12 deficiency, folic acid deficiency, anemia, hypothyroid....Anyway, he was shocked at how much my hearing had improved, and told me to keep doing whatever I'm doing. :) Hooray for vitamins. But, he wants me to get more blood work and then possibly go to Loma Linda and see a specialist to see if there's anything else they can do to help me get my hearing back faster. Oh, and he said I should get it all back. And, in the meantime, he says I can go get hearing aids, but to remember that I may not end up needing them.

Awesome news.
Now I am confused... who said it was autoimmune related? Was that just a guess?
 
Yup Robinn, it was the doctor's guess. Autoimmune is the most common reason other then being exposed to loud noises.

I have a relative that lost his hearing overnight. He has a round physique and now I wonder if it could be reversed from the inside out. He chose to have an implant, which helps him to hear.
 
Update 9/08/08

Hi everyone! Well, in case you're curious, I went to see another audiologist Saturday. She spent 2 hours with me, and according to the test, I gained at least another 5 decibels of hearing from the last test I had on 8/18/08. Right now, I'm wearing loaner hearing aids....and after 5 months of relative quiet, everything seems so loud....*sigh*
 
Actually Robinn, according to the ENT, I've regained too much hearing to qualify for a cochlear implant. The new audiologist thinks that the problem might be in my eustachian tubes, and is encouraging me to get a second opinion on the current ENT.

this is an odd turn of events, Skilly. I'm glad you're getting your hearing back though. Are you going to go get the 2d opinion?

Don't know Meetz. If my insurance will cover it, then maybe. Can't afford the House Hearing Institute or Scripps out of pocket.....but I think Loma Linda takes my insurance. And the audiologist I spoke with this weekend said Loma Linda also has great doctors. She recommends that I go back in October and have my hearing tested again. She thinks something is wrong with my middle ear...possibly the eustachian tubes being blocked. Yesterday I stopped by her office again, and told her that I had some drainage going on in the back of my throat.....she thinks maybe the fluid in the eustachian tubes is draining..as it's supposed to...and that the hearing aids might actually have helped by forcing the ear drums to move. Anyway, that's her best guess. But at least the hearing aids are loaners, and I'm not getting charged for them...yet. :) If I have to have them permanently, they'll go ahead and set up a payment plan for me.....but if not, then they're just on loan. :)
