Hello,

New to the group. I'm currently researching the possibility of changing my current medication for fears out of the long term affects. Is there a particular forum to talk with people that are using Zonegran?

JB

Welcome to CWE jbaustin! I do not know what forums are available here, but really soon, there will be plenty of wonderful individuals on here to help you. I just wanted to say Hello and welcome aboard!

I have taken that crap before and it did a number on me I would switch but of course get other opinions and talk to ur nuerologists

I don't know if I've ever taken it before, I've been on so many different meds that I've lost track. Some meds worked good and others didn't, or may have caused too many side effect form them that I've gone off of them. Meds work different in different people, it might be good to change and it might not. I can't really give you any good advice on that but I'm sure someone else on here can.

I have been on a variety of medications but not long enough to really give to much advise. When you do change medications around with your neuro, make sure you log everything. Keep track of possible auras or emotional changes. I am not sure what else to say but welcome to the forum!

Hi JB, welcome to CWE!

I was on Zonegran, and it did not agree with me. The combination of loss of appetite and sour stomach ended up giving me low blood sugar -- which is trigger for me. I switched to Lamictal after the Zonegran triggered a massive seizure. Zonegran is also the only med I've been on that's given me cognitive issues, specifically problems with word-finding.

This site is helpful for patient feedback on meds: http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=20789&name=ZONEGRAN

If you do try Zonegran, make sure your doc tests you before and after for metabolic acidosis. See: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety...mationforHeathcareProfessionals/ucm095251.htm

Best,
Nakamova

Thanks all for the feed back. For now I don't plan to switch to Zonegran, my Dilantin is working fine with just a few side affect.

JB,

Just thought I'd let you know, I've been on Dilantin for 40+ years and have had no really bad side effects so far. I've got a great doctor who has me test for everything plus has me on vitamins etc. I haven't had a grand mal seizure in over a decade now so since I'm healthy I prefer not to switch medications.
My biggest problem with Dilantin is overdosing when it decides to spike. We've yet to be able to pinpoint the cause of the spike but I am getting much better at recognizing the signs of an overdose :). I've tracked my blood levels & dosages for 10+ years so I can discuss what dosage changes I think are appropriate with my doc.

Welcome to the CWE - there is so much information here it is amazing and empowering and the people are awesome!

Enjoy the moment!
