Has anyone heard of any link with coloring your hair and seizures?

Inhaling ammonia can cause seizures, because it cuts off oxygen to the brain, but I think that would only be an isolated event as opposed to an actual cause.
Those with severe allergic reactions to it may have a slighter chance of developing seizures from the anyphlaxis but that's small.

Huskymom,

Hair dye ingredients have definitely been linked to cancer. And it may cause seizures and death if you eat it: http://www.japi.org/november_2009/article_03.pdf

There's an ingredient called PPD in many hair dyes that lots of people are allergic to. Who knows what kind of reaction different people could have, especially the extremely sensitive. Lok here: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/62324.php

If you are concerned about the chemicals in hair dye and possibly triggering a seizure, most large health food stores have natural, non-chemical hair dyes. The natural dyes don't work quite as well as the chemical kind and aren't "permanent," but they are worry-free.

Try this stuff: http://www.actnaturals.com/
Here's a review at treehugger.com: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/11/natural-hair-dye-from-act-naturals.php

I'm a little worried about one thing about the ingredients of Actnaturals. They say it uses "smaller" molecules Do they mean nanoparticles? If they do those have been linked to genetic mutation and cancer when ingested or inhaled, though research has shown nanos don't tend to penetrate the skin layer when you just use it on your skin. Actnaturals also use "natural mineral salts," which could mean aluminum. So I guess nothing is perfect.

For all dyes, be sure to read the label to see if they have chemicals. Any product that says Natural and also "permanent" will also have chemicals in it. (can't be permanent without chemicals) The ones with peroxide are okay - peroxide tends to be nontoxic. But if it has peroxide it probably has artificial oxidative dyes in it, too. And even if it doesn't have ammonia, it may have DEA instead, and that stuff is BAD. I can't believe they put that stuff on something that goes on our skin. Here's the material safety data sheet on that stuff: http://www.huntsman.com/performance_products/NPE/PDFs/MSDS_US/Diethanolamine MSDS US.pdf.

Henna is really good, if you don't have a ton of gray. But it is hard to find a henna that is colored (other than red) that uses strictly plant-based dyes and not chemicals. Again, read the label. And don't mix hair dyes or perms with henna. It can turn your hair green. Ugh.

Here's a website chock full of henna education: http://www.hennaforhair.com/science/index.html

Here's a link to a natural hair dye recipie. Who knows if it works. It seems to me it would turn your hair green. If anybody tries it, will you let us know? http://www.pioneerthinking.com/graydye.html

Oops. TMI. (Did I mention that seizures have made me run on and on and on and on and on? Can't shut up sometimes, not even in writing)

I've noticed twice now that my daughter has had a seizure after dying her hair. She had one 2 days after the first hair dye and the same night of the second hair dye. The only change or explanation that I can think of is because of the dye. I'm currently waiting for the doctor to call to try and figure it out. I should mention that she did use the Garnier Olia, powered by oil instead of ammonia, so she did try to use a better product.

Hair dye and seizures

Hello back :)

I'm not positive but it does seem to be a bit coincidental. So 2 for 2 now although the seizure after the first hair dye (ammonia free hair dye I might add) took 2 days to occur. The second happened the same day, within hours of dying and using the exact same hair dye (Garnier olia oil powered colour). Still waiting for the doctor to call back, I'll run it by her and see what she knows or has heard of it.

Has she had more than the two seizures? If so, then it's more likely that the hair dye is just a coincidence. Sometimes triggers are cumulative -- like fatigue, plus low blood sugar. Sometimes it can be dietary or hormonal or environmental. And sometimes there's no obvious trigger at all. Keeping a diary can help, though.

Yes, I've noticed that there really are no regularities when it comes to triggers for her. The hair dye has been the only tiny consistency if you want to call 2 in a row a sign for trigger. The doctor has changed her meds today though because we just upped to the second highest you can go on the latest drug and she still had a seizure only 6 days afterward. This is so scary, like walking on glass all the time not knowing when or where the next one will be. Even though Epilepsy has been around for centuries, knowledge about it and solutions lag quite severely. I'm surprised they haven't found more answers and solutions by now, seems to be really behind the times.

I hope the medication increase helps get her seizures under control. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a bit of trial and error to get the right med at the right dose.

As where we are now and have been since this past May. Her seizures got worse since putting her back on medication than when she was meds free. Meds free they were approx 3 months apart. On meds her seizures occurred often and were completely unpredictable with all the changes and such. We almost lost her on June 29th with one of those unexpected seizures when she had one in a pool. Luckily my other 2 daughters were there in time to pull her out and perform CPR. But it was touch and go at the hospital as they weren't sure if she'd make it or not. She was in the CCU for the entire week. Anyway, it's safe to say that people with Epilepsy can't have a life, can't be alone, can't drive or do much of anything else until their seizures are under control for quite a long time with meds. This has become a nightmare! There needs to be more research done with answers, we need to start finding cures instead of band-aid solutions.

I have heard of it. In fact I had to stop working in hair salon because dyes, perms, hair spray, anything with ammonia & toxic chemicals triggered seizures. I know they have natural hair dyes now but they still smell horrible. I choose not to take a chance on using them.
