Has anyone here ever had Zinc toxicity? I had a seizure in my sleep for the first time in some time last night and after reading up on Zinc toxicity I noticed I have the tingling in my feet and hands they mention. I am guessing my seizure last night was from taking too many Zinc tablets. I was taking 600 mg the last two nights it to get rid of a cold sore lol

Hi, Forward,

I've never had zinc toxicity. My primary care physician watches what supplements I take, and is careful the amounts are safe.

I forget what meds you are on? Some of them have nerve pain, including tingling, as a side effect. So it could be zinc, could be meds, could be seizure.

Can you give us more info? What are your meds? How long does the tingling last? Any other symptoms with it? Have you called your PCP and asked about it all?

I'm on 1200 mg of Tegretol XR and 500 mg of generic lamictal. I see my Dr today so I'll see what he says.

Studies have shown that Zinc can help shorten a cold if you taken it in the first few days. I have zinc tablets (sort of like lifesavers) that I'll take for a cold, but the instructions stress that it's important to space them out over a given period, and not take more than a certain amount. Ideally the zinc tablets you were taking were sort of "extended release", but it;'s possible you were getting too much all at once. You should be careful because one potential side effect from zinc over-use is loss of smell: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/06/090618130709.htm

Zinc toxicity

I tried taking zinc, however I had a seizure each time I tried.

I take over the counter L-Lysine 1000mg a day for mouth sores. I have been doing this for many years and it has worked for me.
I am taking dilantin and clonazepam for my seizures

I don't if this would affect your med. Be careful.

Do be careful of taking too much Lysine. Amino acids like Lysine act in conjunction with other Amino Acids. Lysine works with Arginine and you should be careful of putting your Lysine levels out of balance unless they are already extremely low.

I"d suggest reading "A prescription for nutritional Healing" by Phyllis A. Balch.

My Neuroligist wrote me a RX for Acyclovir after I told him about the Zinc. Acyclovir is the bomb for cold sores lol Litterally.
