My husband was on 25mg Topamax, along with Gabapentin [1000mg] before he went in for VEEG. After they found the "abnormality" on his EEG, they sent him for a SPECT scan; then immediately after that was finished they put him on 100mg of Topamax x2 daily, which I've been told is not a *huge* dose to put someone with seizures on. Okay, so.

While on the tiny 25mg he was fine, it helped clear up his mind foggy-ness, he felt "better" and it stopped his seizures a good bit, but was still having them regardless.

Fast forward to now..
It's helped his seizures really good, he had 5 Friday & only 1 yesterday; which is amazing for him! BUT! He's had these red, splotchy, itchy spots on his forehead since they put him back on it Thursday night, after a little while they popped up. We both just thought it was because they had to redo the electrodes after havin the SPECT scan done. Okay, fine.

But also, he has Tourettes Syndrome and his TS has been waaaay worse vocally than before. It will wax & whane, I get that, I've been around it for years now; BUT it's just a weird worse for him if that makes sense? He was on Keppra, but he had to stop it because it messed with his TS too [it made him feel top heavy and he would tip over, along with severe increase in vocal and other things]

Come Friday when we leave they've merged from his forehead down to his nose/cheeks area. By the time we got home Friday night it was all the way down to his mouth and it was really red & splotchy around there.

He woke up yesterday morning and he looked like he had chicken pox. No lie, but he's already had that, so I know that's not what it is. Now they've all "merged" together into one big red splotchy face that itches like crazy he said. And it hurts when he scratches it. It basically looks like 'wind chap' minus being out in the wind lol.

Anyone have this?

I think you should get in touch with his doctor right away, both because of the hives and because of the effect on his Tourette's. It definitely sounds like an allergic reaction. It's too bad the ramp-up on The Topomax was so large and so rapid; usually the best way avoid the allergic reaction is go "low and slow" -- increasing in small increments over a longer period of time.

I'm definitely calling them tomorrow just to make sure because it really sounded like one to me too. The whole TS thing was bothering him too and he's "used to TS by now" and if it's bothering him, then it must be pretty bad lol.

The main problem was that when they took him off of his medicine after his last dose Monday morning they took him off cold turkey, therefore Tuesday he had over 40 partial seizure episodes, then Wednesday he was still having a good bit [that's the day they caught the "abnormal activity" on there] so after they caught that & got him through the SPECT scan they said they just could not & would not send him home having that many because it wasn't safe, so they put him on that immediately & kept him until Friday to get some more information and to also keep an eye out for side effects.

The thing was that we both 'shrugged off' the splotchy red because we both thought it was just from having electrodes on and then re-attached if they came off a lot and also thought the TS flare up was just he was frustrated and ready to go home because it tends to get worse if he gets stressed out or upset and/or overly excited. So, we just owned it up to that.

So I'm definitely going to call them tomorrow to try to get him worked in sooner because his appointment isn't until 11/28, which was fine to begin with, but now that this is going on, he really needs in.
