Remember....

Looks like a great list but remember that Grapefruit lessens the effect of certain AED's (including Tegretol) & Borage oil is thought to decrease some peoples seizure threshold since it contains substantial amounts of GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid)

Thanks Robin, I'm copying and saving this list...

Who is this aimed at? I see many foods in the list that cannot be used for GARD. I went to the link you provided and I didn't see who this diet is aimed at.

Where do you specifically find fault with it and the GARD, Molly?

Eric, I always have had a theory about Grapefruit (hate the stuff myself), but...
it is an antifungal, and antibacterial, and I wonder if it improves the liver pathways as lemon juice does. I have wondered if due to that it actually improves the elimination of meds far too quickly.

I know nothing about Borage oil.

People seek out Dr. Axe’s health advice from all over the country whether it is for more chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease, digestive problems, headaches, joint pain, autoimmune disease, or for childhood disorders such as autism, ADHD, asthma and scoliosis.

Robin,
I am simply using the information on Dogtor J's site. He states that cashews are high in glutamate as are pumpkin seeds. Mushrooms are high in glutamate as are lentils and beans. Of course the grasses are not allowed and likewise soy sauce. Corn is just not allowed at all. Ezekial bread, Spelt and sprouted grains likewise are not allowed.

Concerning beans and nuts, he states to use no beans until excitotoxin levels are under control and then add them back in as organic black, pinto and kidney beans. Likewise with the nuts. His suggestion is to not eat any nuts or seeds while you get the excitotoxins under control and then eat them only sparingly.

What you have listed is a fairly good compendium of foods for health with the exceptions I've noted. However, the items I've noted need to be avoided in the beginning on the GARD. For that reason, I cannot see this list as a "healing foods" list, because there are items on it that are high in glutamate and therefore not "healing."

I've heard similar things about Borage oil, but I don't find my link about it.

That's a good theory re. grapefruit. I never considered why it lessens the effect of my meds but I know it does.

As for the Borage oil...
Gamma-Linolenic Acid

Also known as: GLA .

May help: Heart disease, lupus, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, eczema, fingernail problems, endometriosis, menstrual cramps, premenstrual syndrome, and sunburn.

Special instructions: Take after a meal.

Cautions and possible side effects: Do not use supplements without the supervision of a physician if you are taking aspirin or anticoagulants (blood thinners) regularly, have a seizure disorder, or are taking epilepsy medication such as phenothiazines. Do not take borage oil if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. May cause headaches, indigestion, nausea, and softening of stools.

Also, you're welcome Molly

ooooh I just ate a snack last night of black currants and raw almonds. It was so good, and will most likely be around more often.

I do see where you are coming from Molly. I guess what I have done for Rebecca (and mostly myself) is to take a cross section of the nutritional plans that I know to be helpful, and find the commonality. I am making a better attempt at rotating foods, so that a new allergy won't be developed just because it is being eaten daily.

I figure we are following my made up plan about 80% of the time. It is working so I am a little flexible with her choices. I believe that you can be GFCFSFCF and still have far too many simple carbs during the day. Plus with Rebecca's known hypoglycemia....

Truly ..... I just realized I have no plan at all. Total guess work and intuition.
This list just is helpful to show her when in doubt, check it out.

Robin,
And we have to remember, it's all individual. For instance, pumpkin is on this list as well as Dogtor J's, but when I've made pumpkin soup(which I love)I have a seizure. So, for me personally....and so it goes for all of us.

If you check the glutamate level on the different foods in the list, you'll see that's where the difference is coming from with Dogtor J. Such as mushrooms. Which I love and don't eat right now. I have a real problem with beef; high glutamate levels again.

I no longer obsess about my diet(I did in the beginning), but I find that, for myself, Dogtor J's guidelines hold true for me. And it's all about the glutamate levels for me; I believe at least one of the seizure medications is aimed at controlling glutamate levels in the brain(Lamictal maybe?). How much better to simply control the intake of it through diet!

Rebecca does not have an immediate reaction to any of the foods that she eats. Other than perhaps high sugar around the time of high energy use. Even that isn't a given.
So it has been tough to narrow it down to any one thing. More of an accumulation for her.

Rebecca is not on medication, so her body is controlling this naturally. I think the medication when she was taking it was definitely throwing her system wacky. By clearing the toxins and allowing her body to function as it was meant to, and give it food that it was meant to get, she is healing.

I am so glad that you have found a way that you are able to control your seizures. It really is exciting. Do you think it helps emotionally as well?

I know I'm very even emotionally for the first time in my life, and I'm 61. IMHO, when you're not distressing your body with foods that it can't cope with, your emotional well-being is affected in a positive manner. In the past, I've been diagnosed with bipolar and DID. The so-called mood swings they saw were due to the DID; that resolved back in 2002 after long, intensive therapy.

I know you've said Rebecca has been in counseling. What do you see with her emotional state since she's been eating right?

It is hard to pin-point as she is a teen, and this all has occurred as her body has been rushed with hormones. It also has been difficult because she was put on medication early on (14) and that did a number on her emotionally. I have to say since being off of the meds, and eating better, she is back to her happy self. She is beginning to be more confident again, and less risky choices. Again, it is also a part of maturity.

She says she feels better.
Her energy has been low, but says after this last round of chelation she doesn't feel as tired. I think I will keep it up each weekend before she goes back to school, to see if she continues to feel improvement in that area. She uses a lot of energy each day with her skating, and will more so as she is coming up on some competitions.

Wonderful to know that you are improving and feeling better. I suspect it must be heartwarming to John to know he is improving the quality of life for so many.

I don't know if you get the Mercola enewsletter, but this article was in there today about B12 and energy levels. http://products.mercola.com/vitamin-b12-spray/?source=nl

YES I read it and was considering trying this variety of the vitamin. Seems worth it.
Stan Kurtz swears by it, and has even come up with a lollypop for kids. Revitapop I think.

Grapefruit & Tegretol

Looks like a great list but remember that Grapefruit lessens the effect of certain AED's (including Tegretol) & Borage oil is thought to decrease some peoples seizure threshold since it contains substantial amounts of GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid)

CARBAMAZEPINE (in Tegretol) may interact with GRAPEFRUIT JUICE

"Grapefruit juice may block the breakdown of carbamazepine by the liver. If this happens, blood levels of carbamazepine could be increased and this could increase the risk of side effects. Side effects that may occur with the use of carbamazepine include drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, and blurred vision. More serious or potentially life-threatening side effects include repeated infections due to a decrease in white blood cells, excessive bleeding due to changes in the blood's ability to clot, a rare type of anemia that comes on suddenly and can be fatal if left untreated, damage to the liver, and a loss of effectiveness in some type of seizure disorders that normally affect children. Avoid taking carbamazepine with any form of grapefruit, including the actual fruit as well as drinks and nutritional supplements that contain grapefruit juice. Discuss this potential interaction with your healthcare provider at your next appointment, or sooner if you think you are having problems."
