My name is Kevin and I am 27 years old. About 2 years ago I blacked out, and i thought it was a freak thing, i had just had a wisdom tooth pulled and was on pain meds. But then it happened again, and again, and again, and i felt "funny" a few other times. I decided to take off work and get checked out, before i could make my appointment I passed out again and broke my collar bone, and just this last week I had another episode that landed me in the hospital, I fractured my nose and T1 vertebrae. Up until now its been a big mystery, but this time it was without a doubt a grand Mal seizure. Which means I have probably been seizing all along. The crappy thing is I was an airline pilot, and now even with medication my career is over. The dr put me on meds and im hoping it helps, but at this point im seriously nervous about even standing. I really dont know how in the world im gonna be able to live with this if the meds dont work.

Hi Captkev, welcome to CWE!

You are at one of the very toughest moments for a person with a seizure disorder (in my opinion) -- right after diagnosis, tons of unknowns in terms of meds and the future, plus the anger and the fear and anxiety that another seizure is just around the corner. I can tell you that it does get better, or at least easier to cope with. Seeking out information and understanding can help a lot (and CWE is a great place to start).

I'm so sorry that this has ended your career as a pilot; I hope that you can eventually find ways to move forward.

Best,
Nakamova

Welcome to CWE

You're in the right place there are lots of people who are in or have been in the same situation. In terms of having to give up work, and facing the uncertainty of what the future holds. Nakamova is right, it gets easier to deal with in time, in the meantime there are lots of people here who can provide advice and understanding :)

So very sorry this has happened to you, just know you are not alone. I had to give up a career in Law Enforcement, now I had to give up my car. Just know that anger, uncertainy, pity parties are all what we go through. It does get easier in time or we develop copping skills to see us through. It has only been 2 years since I was diagnosed and I have gone through the "why me" stage and now I see it as "it is what it is" and try to move forward. I wish you the best and hang in there!

Hi Kevin and welcome,

Sorry to hear of your predicament. Some of us are in similar situations. My seizures started 30 years ago when I was 23 and I had a career in the airlines. I was also married to an airline pilot. My seizures started out of the blue and I've had CP and TC seizures. I had to quit my career and haven't worked because my seizures worsened despite all avenues of treatment, so I'm not going to say it does get better but I do hope it gets better for you as far as seizure control. You may not be able to fly again, but there are other options as far as a career. Wishing you the best.

Welcome Kevin!!

Sorry to hear that you had to lose your career. Just one of the things some of us have to deal with. Look at as when a door closes, a window opens......best of luck

I appreciate all the support, and at the very least its nice to know im not alone. Im trying to look forward to the future, I hope I will be at least to be able to work some kind of job, but at this point everything i think of scares me. Ive thought of going to Nursing school, but then i think of having a seizure drawing blood or something else. What kind of careers do you all have?
