Hi I'm Danny,

I'm from New Zealand im 27 and I have Absence seizures I was diagnosed with this recently but I have been having the seizures for a while now about 4 years. I'm medicated for the second time and I feel good on this one but not driving for someone who loves driving its hard having to rely on people. So yeah keen to talk to anyone with a similar diagnoses especially from NZ

HI Danny,
Welcome to the site, I love driving too, I wish you the best in all this, quite curious what meds they put you on for Absence seizures/Jaevons syndrome (don't the two overlap) I didn't know.
I'm glad the meds are good, that's quite a journey in it's all right.

Hi and welcome,

I too have absence seizures. I had them all my life, I'm 60 years old.

Been to I don't remember. how many Neur.

I now on Dilantin and Clonazepam, this combo has worked the best for me in getting seizures under control for the most part.
 
Hi dannynz, I've lost my license now twice because of the seizures, and I can definitely relate to the frustrations of not being able to drive while you love to, and having to rely on others. I also hate asking for help. Hope the meds keep being good to you! All the best.

cheers for your support im currently on Tegretol (Carbamazepine Ta 200mg CR) and feeling good.

jyearta could you possibly pm me or give a brief description of what happens during a seizure for you I've only met grand mal (if that term is still used) epileptics so would be good to have some comparison

Hi dannynz,

I am off driving at the moment too and it is extremely frustrating. I hope the meds stay working for you.
 
This is details of my last seizure I was driving home from work on my carpool so not the best place for it too happen

We left site at about 0510 in Sunday morning
We went to the Hororata turn off and headed down Wards road to Rolleston.
We must have been about 10kms from Rolleston, the four of us were talking
all the time, as we do, to make sure we are all awake.
All of a sudden Dan went quiet, and the speed of the car increase to around
120km, Ralph yelled at Dan to slow down, but he didn't respond.
Soon the car was at around 160+km's, we where yelling at Dan, I was behind
him, and I was shaking and yelling at him, but he didn't respond.
Dan's eyes were open, but he was not responding.
After about 4km's at 160km we finally got Dan to stop the car, I don't think
he was awake, but he was responsive enough to stop the car.
I asked Mike to drive, when Mike turned up at Dan's door, it took him about
5 minutes to get out and move to the passenger seat. He was very slow.
About 3 Km's down the road, Dan asked why Mike was driving.
Once we dropped Ralph off I said to Mike that we will drop Dan off at his
home.
I followed Mike in my car so we could get home, Dan asked Mike if Ralph was
in the car, he couldn't remember anything about the event.
It is almost like he blocked out the event.
The next day Dan couldn't remember anything.

That was from my boss who didnt know my condition but you get the idea

I live I Rotorua and was diagnosed with epilepsy this year. Mine started with de ja vu spells for a few months and then one of these episodes graduated to a full on loss of consciousness seizure on Boxing Day. That was the day I had to say goodbye to my drivers licence. I had no more episodes after that and got my licence back in June but had another total black out the week after that, so goodbye licence again. I am now on Topamax and have been seizure free since. (Touch wood!)

I miss driving and totally hate depending on my husband and other family for transport, and hate the fact what sometimes my colleagues have to go out and do something that normally I would have to do, but I can't because I can't drive. I know there are way worse things in life, but it still sucks as you well know!

Yea thats the worst thing i srelying on people, only 6 months!!!!! they have me not driving for 12!! mite look into thaat. Us kiwis gotta stick together aye :)
 
They told me 12 months after I had my second seizure, but last time I saw my neuro in September he said that if I was I was still seizure free after 6 months he would write to land transport on my behalf asking them to consider reinstating my licence. He did say it would be a long shot though. My 6 months is up next month so we will see what happens. My gp told me that if I change my meds though its another automatic 12 months loss of licence, even if I don't have a seizure....did you know that?? Seems harsh!
 
OK, WHEN! I get my appointment ill ask them cause I'd be real happy if it was only 6 :)
 
Hey, nice to meet you! I don't have absence seizures, I have simple and complex partial seizures. I have never found good control, and was diagnosed as a teen, so I have never even tried to get a license. Definitely feel your pain there! It's a bummer to want to be somewhere on the spur of the moment, but always have to inconvenience someone else to do so, or else wait until it's a good time for them. I have a spontaneous personality too, so it really rubs me the wrong way. XP
 
Guess the benefit of never driving is you never fell in love with driving as I have I cant even buy a race car and get my fill there cant wait to drive again
