I am Kiki and this is my first time on this forum. I have complex partial seizures and am currently on Lamictal. Does anyone know about Lamictal's effects on the eyes?

Hi Kiki, glad to have you here. You will find this a place of great support and knowledge.
Bernard made this forum out of love for his wife Stacy. That love has extended throughout all of the forum and to each and everyone of us.

I am on Lamictal. I do not know about it's effects on your eyes. I have diabetes, as well. Diabetes has a large effect on the eyes. Are you having eye problems?

Welcome to the group. :)

I am also on Lamictal. Sometimes I notice blurred vision, but that may be due to turning 40 and needing glasses. My arms don't seem long enough these days. :roflmao:

Hi, hello

and how do you do?

I'm on Lamictal, too. Mmmm. Sometimes I have blurred vision, but I tend to stay up too long, so that could be from being tired.....LOLOL. Speaking of which, I ought to take a nap....*yawning*

Welcome to CWE, Kiki. I'm sure you're going to like it here. Mr B has built us an AWESOME home here. Check out the Library and the Kitchen for tons of information and the Padded Room is great for venting when you need to 9trust me, we've all been there a time or two :) )

Take care!

Hi Kiki and welcome!

I'm on Lamictal, 200mg per day. I went on it about a year ago, and it has definitely affected my vision. I had perfect vision beforehand (from laser surgery) and now I need to squint at things throughout the day. Especially hard are L.E.D. numbers (like the clock on my microwave) and writing on the TV (like the score showing for a baseball game). I don't have to wear glasses yet, but I expect that's down the road.

My eyes also get very dry. In the mornings I need to put eye drops in them as soon as I wake up, they are basically stuck shut.

I don't know why Lamictal causes blurry vision, and if the drugmakers and scientists know they aren't telling. It's only been around about 15 years, so a lot of the side effects haven't been thoroughly studied. My guess is that it has something to do with the fact that Lamictal binds to melanin in the system. Melanin is in the hair eyes and skin, among other places. In addition to being responsible for making our irises darker or lighter, it also helps the eye to remain "limber" for focusing. So when there is less free melanin around (since it's bound the Lamictal), the eye starts to loses the ability to focus. But that's just my guess.

Best,
Nakamova

Welcome Kiki. Come on in and stay awhile.

I take Lamicatal (400 mg/day). I have been on it for about a year. I can't say that it is impacting my vision. My eyes were not perfect before I started it. At 48, I was already headed for reading glasses. Now I have went rapidly right to bifocals.

I think it is just my normal age, because my distance vision has not suffered as much.

Welcome Again

Hi Kiki,
Welcome to CWE. I hope you find supportive information here.

My daughter had vision problems with tegretol and muscle aches with lamictal.
