Hey folks, first time poster here. I ended up in hospital on Sunday after having a seizure for the first time in about 8 years. I've been prescribed lamictal and having read through the list and commonality of side effects, I'm really reluctant to start this treatment. The last time I was medicated was with Epilim and that made me very paranoid and edgy so I stopped in 2006. Essentially, I'm hoping for advice as to how better manage my condition without taking the meds. I'm already doing my best to manage my sleep patterns; avoiding late nights, alcohol, drugs and stressful situations (which in fairness I haven't been recently).

So, can anyone give me some new pointers? I'm thinking of trying out a homeopath locally, has anyone had any success with that?

I appreciate any replies..

Hi scottster, welcome to CWE!

I understand your reluctance to medicate -- medication is a blunt instrument, and the side effects can be intolerable. That said, I'm on Lamictal without any significant problems, so it can and does happen. :)

Being proactive about your health is a good approach, whether you are on meds or not. Tips are here: http://www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f22/proactive-prescription-epilepsy-1254/

A good book to check out is "Epilepsy: A New Approach - What Medicine Can Do, What You Can Do for Yourself".

And some folks have had success in reducing their seizures with dietary/nutritional approaches and/or neurofeedback. More info here:

Ok, I've decided.. I think!

I've booked myself an appointment with a homeopath for Wednesday next to discuss possible alternatives to Lamictal, so I'll be more that happy to fill you good folks in on how that goes and if I decide to take a remedy, I will of course let ye know if it's helpful.

I'm also doing alot of reading on diet, particularly those foods rich in tryptophans, which are supposed to assist with REM sleep. I reckon the next stage is to sit down with a nutritionist and get to grips with a good multivitamin or similar.

And I'm 4 days drug and alcohol free. I play music most nights so that's a bit of an occupational hazard for me! Today is Arthur's Day here in Ireland, so there's more free Guinness than you can shake a stick at, but for me the cost is way too high. I played gigs over the last 2 nights and was in bed sober by 12.30am each night. Weird, but good!

Anyway, thanks for being here for me and letting me share this stuff. You guys are cool.
