Hi my name is Marilyn, I have a daughter that has recently been diagnosed with absent seizures, she is six years old and never has shown any sign until about December of last year. They seem to be more frequent and more intense then what they were intially. My daughter is not very aware of them, but they have put her way behind in school. I have not tried any medicines yet and I am little worried to put her on some, I have heard and read some terrible things about them. I also have a son who just turned five and has not yet shown any signs of seizures, but my daughter did not either until she was a little over six. Anyway I am a little new to all this so I look forward to everyones advice and thoughts. Thanks, Marilyn

Welcome Married Marilyn

So sorry to hear about your daughter.

I've had seizures all my life so I've been on medications all my life and am very familiar with their side-effects.

The thing to remember is that by law if any side-effect appears, even to 1 in a million people it has to be listed (as I feel it should). That often tends to make the medications look more intimidating than they should.

Also, you should be aware that the more seizures someone has, the more the brain remembers the seizure & is more likely to repeat it and over time they are likely to get worse.

In my opinion, I feel that we should always be aware of what is disturbing our life the most, the side-effects or the seizures themselves.

Also, you may want to look at some of the alternative treatments for seizures. In the history book in the library you can read about peoples experiences with the various alternatives.

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks

I have looked at the ketogenic diet and have been trying the modified atkins diet I ahve not been able to find much more on alternatives. I went to a doctor that my husband and I did not care for to much and he was not that helpful. I used to be a sleep tech which run partial eegs so when I seen hers I knew how to read it. I is so much different when it is your own baby and can't help her I want to do every thing I possibly can to help her in anyway. Thanks, Marilyn

There is at least one member here that had good results with neuro-feedback.

It is expensive & I don't think most insurances cover it though.
