Just a curious question. Do you have eeg's every year.....6 months....more or less often? We have a follow-up at a year for our son and I just wondered if that is typical? His seizures are minor and infrequent, thank God. He likely has BRE.

Over the last 14 years, I've only had an EEG at the very start when they made the epilepsy diagnosis, and twice when I've tried tapering off medication.

I think it depends on whether you're medicated and whether the seizures are controlled. It may not be absolutely necessary in your son's case, but the neurologist may want to make sure there are no signs that seizures are increasing or spreading. You could ask the neurologist what he's looking for with the EEG.

It sounded like it was routine thing. Our ped ordred it and he is the more cautious sort. We won't be at a year until April/May and he's already said that he wants to do one then, so it's not like he has any immediate concerns. He's not on meds that he would have to monitor. One possible thing is that the EEG showed some atypicalities for BRE.....only spikes on one side....which could still be BRE. I wonder if he's trying to see if there is a more typical BRE reading this time. Every single physical symptom and developmental indicator says BRE, but the EEG didn't. MRI was normal.

I had one when I first got diagnosed, and then another when I saw my new neurologist (a couple of months later). I did one last month for three days, but because it came up clear and I said I was still having partial seizures, my neurologist wants to do another one in the next few weeks (a video EEG because it's normal). In my case, he wants to decide whether or not I need to continue on my current medications or if I need to switch in order to be completely controlled.
