Hi!
My husband and I are going to a fertility center. I typically have absence seizures, but earlier this year I had 3 tonic clonic seizures (1 in Feb, March, & April). Last week I had a test called an HSG, which is done to see if the fallopian tubes are clear or blocked. Fortunately my tubes are clear! However, after the test I started developing a headache. I had taken two Motrin before the test, and I took two more Motrin a couple of hours after the test. It didn't help my headache, but for awhile it was just staying the same. I ended up taking a nap a few hours later, as eventually the pain was becoming less tolerable. When I woke up it had developed into a migraine. I was having clusters of absence seizures. I hadn't had any seizures in approximately 3 weeks with the exception of one absence seizure induced during the hyperventilation part of an EEG. For a brief period of time, it seemed like the clusters were because I had just woken up, and it seemed like things were getting better. Then out of what seemed nowhere the clusters started up again more intense and with the seizures lasting longer and closer together. I think my husband put it perfectly when he told me it looked like I was being electrocuted. We called the fertility center as well as my neuro. The on call fertility dr said he didn't know much about seizures, but didn't think it was as a result of the HSG. The neuro's office put me through to the on call Physician's Assistant since it was after hours. The PA wasn't too helpful. I told him I was concerned that I was going to have a tonic clonic, and he said he would call me right back. Approximately 45 minutes later, my husband and I were sitting on the sofas commenting on how unacceptable the wait was, and I then had a tonic clonic seizure- my 4th ever. He said it lasted approximately 3 minutes, and my recovery time was approximately 15 minutes. He got a hold of the PA who ended up having an Ativan Rx phoned in, and said to take two and go straight to bed. He said if I had another tonic clonic to go to the hospital. Fortunately, I took the two Ativan and had no more seizures. The next day I was feeling dizzy for the first half of the day, but gradually felt better.
Has anyone heard of the HSG possibly causing seizures? Have you heard if the IUI procedure could cause seizures? We aren't considering IVF and won't be taking hormones. I was thinking it could be the dye they put in me for the HSG or the procedure itself since it is such a painful test. The PA didn't know, and it doesn't seem like there is a lot of information out there. I'm just wondering for the sake of peace of mind if it could have been the test, or if it was somehow related to stress even though the results were clear tubes and the seizures started 9 hours after the test. I was definitely stressed beforehand!
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
